i had an extra small hard drive i used for xbox until i get a 120 gig, gotta wait for a good deal. when i dont need it, can i just reformat it under windows (or dos). the hard drive is not locked, only used the evox hd install disc on it.

You'd have to repartition it first, but essentially you are correct. In Win9x, you can use the DOS utility FDISK and then format it. In WinNT/2K/XP, you can use Disk Manager to repartition and format the disk.
