Hi all newbie here. Im having trouble playing anything on the xbox. No matter what kind of media i put in, i get a message that it cannot be read and that it might be scratched. I am however, able to play the sountracks that are stored on the drive.

I also read over a tutorial on xbox-scene about tweaking the drive's laser. But that tutorial applies when the xbox does not want to play certain cdr's or cdrw's. So im not sure if that will solve my problem.

And yes i did a search, but me being a newbie im not too sure on what to search for besides "help". I will continue to read over more topics to see if i get lucky. TIA.

1. How are you making your backups? 2. What kind of media are you using?

maybe you should burn on cdrw (verbatim 700mb are very good in my opinion),or as jesterrace says, xbox isos aren't like pc's ones....

I am not using any backups or any imported games. Real Authentic games, DVD's and Audio CD's.
This is a "hand me down" xbox so i dont know exactly if it had been dropped before. All i know that it was so dirty with dust and a few bugs. I opened the xbox up following yet another tutorioal from xbox-scene. Clean it up a bit and put everything back together. Then i powered it up and everything seemed to be working, except when it comes time for the drive to read a disc. Thats why im kinda leaning to the fact that the laser on the drive might need some tweaking. But before I start taking things apart again, I wanted to get some help and advice from some of you. And just and FYI, prior to me openning the xbox and cleaning it, i did not personally power it up and test it. I wanted to give it a good clean first and was very careful not to mess with any components. Thanx again.

Sounds to me like the XBOX is defective if it's not reading originals. POT-TWEAKING is only done to help your XBOX read recordable media better. The DVD drive might have a problem.

Could there be any other solutions or remedies besides having to buy a new DVD or even yet an Xbox?

If there was that much dust there is a pretty good chance the DVD drive got some in it. You could try to open it up and then blast it with some compressed air.

Actually you don't even have to open it up.

Eject the disk and use a can of compressed air in the DVD opening.

Make sure that you keep the can UPRIGHT.

If you turn it upside down, you'll get the Freon Liquid directly being ejected which will turn to ICE inside the drive really fouling things up.

BTW: Lik Sang now sells replacement optical units for the DVD drive, if push comes to shove.

Yeah but for $59! For $20 more you can get a working thompson!

You can try to get a commerical DVD lense cleaner, obviously the quality and the propensity to work depends on the brand and the maker.

Worst come to worst just get a new drive. Some well sell thompsons for cheap.
