Hmmm.... What I want in total is an Xbox 360, headset, hdd, and vga cable. Later on I'll get a wired controller when I get fed up with replacing batteries (I'm not getting a charge and play kit or rechargeable battery pack since I'm getting a wired controller down the road).

I guess going with the Xbox360 premium pack with everything is my bang for the buck deal. I mean, if I went for the core system then got a harddrive, that's already 399.99 (the price of the Xbox360 premium pack with everything).

I calculated the price for the canadian Xbox360 premium pack. It's around 479.99$ cdn.

For me, with taxes and everything, that's 550$cdn. Then a game would be 69.99 + tax = 80$cdn.
Then a vga cable would be 55$cdn total.

That's around 685-700 bucks for me total, with taxes and everything calculated. I already have half of that saved up, now I jsut gotta get the other 350 bucks.

sad.gif Hey, that's life. It kinda blows on how the price isn't what we expected, but we just gotta live with it.

Is it just me, or does the Core console have a white dvd drive bezel while the Premium has the chrome silver bezel? blink.gif

no you're right... that's part of the features of the "premium" package... chrome trim... the HDD has chrome trim too. I'd be willing to bet the stand alone hard drive does not.

Exactly... last time I checked... it cost (on average) 30% more to sell an equivalent item in the UK for the simple cost of taxes and duties.

Goldfiinger, you're the first person I've heard complain about the UK prices

Need I remind you that the current gen Xbox launched at 475 pounds rolleyes.gif

Not to mention the premium package comes with component cables... which aren't even available over there this generation.

EDIT:
$399.99 works out to £221.45 with current exchange rates... add in the 30% for taxes and duties and you're up to £287.89 considering that the price is actually £279.99 MS is actually selling it for less in the UK than in the states... if you really have a problem with the price you should take it up with your government... MS has outdone themselves for Europe this time around.

Why in the world did MS flip-flop? What happened to their original plan?
They added $100.00 to their original ideal 'box. Then they give people the option for some $299.00 hunk o' junk.
I don't know what to say anymore.

I am dissappointed about the lack of a HDD in the standard console. Although I will probably still get the x360, I am not very happy about the non-unified system configuration.

In addition the price advantage that the x360 once held has all but vanished.

Why'd they have to go and add on that extra hundred?
They could have at least went mid-way with the price, say $349.99? That my friends, would be the sweet spot.

Technically the premium version is the "Xbox 360" and the basic version is the "Xbox 360 Core Console"

Most people look at it and they see a basic console and then an upgraded version.

Based on what we were expecting to be included and the NAMING of the packages the premium is the standard console and the CORE is a DOWNGRADED version ... essentially just the CORE console with no extras.

For all intents and purposes the Xbox 360 costs $400 and if you want it without the extra stuff you can save $100...

after talking with several developers on these board over the past few weeks about the rumors of a no hard drive package I'm not too worried about it.

The biggest benefit to having the hard drive included is file caching... and the only benefit caching has is lower loading times. Considering the loading times WITHOUT the hard drive are next to non-existant... I think it's really a moot point.

The only other benefit to games is downloadable content... and anyone who's planning on using live will have the hard drive... it's not like the PS2 hard drive that didn't come out till YEARS after launch. I'd be willing to bet that if the hard drive was available as a package at launch and added features like backwards compatibility, game demo downloads, and media storage it would have had 80%+ coverage on the PS2...

I guess I'll have to save up another hundred then. Damn flip-floppers.
On another note, would the Core version be Backward-compatible?

It's hard to tell... I'm banking on NOT BC... because the emulation profiles need to sit somewhere.

Considering the Xbox Guide and Dashboard still exists I'm sure there's some internal flash memory... the emulator probably sits on that as well,

It really comes down to if the emulation profiles can fit on that... or if you can put emulation profiles on the memory card

Yes, but like with ANY console that requires cards to save game saves (ps1, ps2), you need some sort of storage device, like a memory card.

Note that in the press release that Xbox Live Silver is only available on the Premium Console, thus indicating it requires a HDD to work.
