QUOTE(J Allard talks to EuroGamer)
Eurogamer: How long will it take before the gameplay will live up to the [next gen] potential?

J Allard: That's going to be up to the game creators. It's hard to say. I think the Live Arcade, by reducing the cost of manufacture and saying you don't have to manufacture discs, you don't need a ten million dollar budget, etcetera, and etcetera [means that] anybody can make a Live Arcade game. If you have a crazy nutty idea with three friends in a garage that wants to do something "genre-busting" breakout that's going to broaden the audience, you should give me a call and you could do that with a hundred thousand dollars. You could go and invent a breakout kind of game.

Great news from our man J Allard, "anybody can make a Live Arcade game." all you need is a "hundred thousand dollars".

That's great for me and my buds who program in the garage. I already came up with a genre-busting idea, modchip!!!

Anyone...with a hundred thousand dollars...

[sarcasm on]
I don't know any "garage programmers" who have a hundred thousand dollars stashed away for this golden opportunity.

I think what exint is saying is that in order to get a Small business's Idea of a new game out to the world is a lot cheaper and easier then every before with this new live arcade. In stead of selling your idea so some big shot corp. or going trought college just to get a job at a big shot corp like EA, you can just put your fate in the peoples hand and hope you grow big from there. Of course thats a balls to the wall move, but a lot of our third party game makers made the same move. and look where their at now.
But I think J.A. Wasn't talking about hardware, just software

I think that XBL Arcade will be around more for dev companies like Pop Cap Games(who made Bejeweled). The XBL Arcade could really help small game companies to get their product out to the world.

Now I don't think that just any "garage" dev will have that ability because you can hide code in the homebrew that will allow you to run a app that can only be accessed by pressing up, left, a, b, a, x, y, down, left, and start to the beat of "Schnappi Das Kleine Krocodil"(google it, it's a hit in Germany as well as most of the world).

$100,000 is a lot of money. I know that I can't get a small business loan for that much plus enough to cover equipment.

Ok I guess I used more sarcasm in my first post than is necessary on the internet.

My point of view is that $100,000 might be great compared to what big name company's pay but thats still alot of money, more than I can ever imagine coming up with. There are definitely small company's that have that kinda cash and are going to take advantage of this and thats great but they are probably already established somewhat.
It's the way J Allard puts it, "garage" developers... well people that actually fall in this catagory are still going to rely on mod chips if they want to program for the 360.

Almost forgot... you gotta factor in the price of a dev kit to make these live games, anyone know that off hand?

i think dev kitgs would be pretty expensive, and as long as modchips are legal anyone that small making games for the arcade would probably use a modded 360. and i think that this is his way of saying dont use modchips, were letting u make your own stuff. (sarcasm on) remember how they're taking the feature that modding gave us and integrating them.

I'm sure the $100k includes a dev kit and software only.

Haha! that song bumped Nelly off the #1 spot on the charts after 6 months in Germany, he got beaten out by a 5 year old singing a pre-school song.

I read the "$100,000" comment rather differently. I believe this was just a number he threw out to illustrate games could be made cheaper, not some sort of "entry fee" to live arcade.

I believe the 100k comment was merely a stab at what he guessed it would cost to develop a high-quality (not flash, people), innovative game. With games costing millions and millions of dollars, I can forgive him for throwing out a number like this.

I'm confident that if three guys in a garage sent an awesome demo to MS asking to publish the real thing on Live! than MS would be happy to sell them the relatively affordable dev kits.

100k was a guess at development costs for a budget next-gen title that would sell on Live.
