I have a Samsung 605b DVD drive that will read original game disks all day long but will not read backups on any media I have thrown at it. I have done extensive searching and found that a few others are having the same problem. But no one knows how to fix this issue. My thought is that maybe the laser is either slightly higher or lower than it needs to be to read a backup disk. I have a friend who had a Playstation that would read older games but not newer ones. He adjusted on the height of the laser until he dialed it in and it has worked perfectly since. I have come to think that this might help my situation because I do believe that the information on a backup is burned deeper into the disk that an original. Does this sound logical or am I just grabbing for a hope? Any suggestion welcome.

please wait 24hrs before bumping.

i have never heard of adjusting the posistion of the laser at all. i know you can tweak the power to the laser.

i dont think there are any tuts on how to do this, so you might have to do a bit of trial and error if you want to try this yourself.

There isnt any adjustment to move the laser up and down. You could replace the laser with a new one or just buy a new thompson off ebay. They read most anything.

i didnt think there was any vertical adjustment in the xbox drives.

a new laser can be cheaper then a new drive in most cases.

but i would warn aginst thompsons. i dont like them, and they have a very bad reputation as bad drives.

just remember that they are adjusted when they are made, so it is possible for each drive to be different

G'day Guy's. The prob is most likely a weak laser. Adjust the pot VERY carefully while using a multimeter. there are some good TUTS out there which I refer to constantly.

http://www.xbox-scene.com/tutorials.php

I chip xboxes constantly and have more probs with the Phillips than the Thompson. If you can fix your Samsung that would be your best option. They're awesome They'll read a bit of cardboard with scribble on it........

if you wan tto do that (i have done it to my phillips), just make sure you read ALL the tus you can find, so that you have a very good idea on what your doing.

and dont try it without a multi-meter, thats just asking to kill the drive
