Is the Xbox 360 the 2nd coming of the Sega Dreamcast? -- Posted by XanTium on November 5 10:50
From 1up.com:
[QUOTE]
* 23 eerie parallels between Xbox 360 and the Sega Dreamcast.
Ever since the first details of the Xbox 360 hit the web, gamers have drawn comparisons to Sega's ill-fated (yet still highly regarded) Dreamcast console. There are the obvious examples - the timing of the launches or the color of the hardware - but then there are a lot of not so obvious ones, too. As part of our Xbox 360 countdown, we've put together a list of our favorites. Noticed any others?

* 10 reasons why Xbox 360 will succeed where the Dreamcast stumbled
Sure, it's easy to come up with some parallels between the two platforms, but will the Xbox 360 go the way of the Dreamcast and have Microsoft abandon it a few years into its life cycle? Extremely unlikely. Microsoft is in a much different position than Sega was a few years ago. Here are some of the top reasons why the Xbox 360 will succeed where the Dreamcast failed.

Yeah, I read this last night and thought while an interesting read (one I take no stock in, mind you) some of the comparisons were just plain dumb.

Examples: #9, #14, #18, #21 and #22

Now I thought the reasons they showed for the Dreamcast failing was a lot better. For the most part (7 and 8 excluded), those are all true reasons why it failed and why the 360 will succeed.

The Dreamcast not playing DVD's and the Xbox360 not playing HD-DVD/Blu-Ray
is not a similarity.

*When the Dreamcast came out DVD players were already available on the market for everyone to buy.

*When the Xbox360 comes out how many HD-DVD/Blu-Ray players will be on the market??

I think #2 is the dumbest of all. Unless the PS3 is as advanced over the Xbox 360 as PS2 was over Dreamcast.

And, on the Xbox succeed side #6 is plain wrong. Behind the duke the dreamcast controller is my favorite. And, maybe the atari tennis paddle.

I thought so, too, but given that they put "far superior" in quotes I assumed that they are saying supposedly. And I also thought the DC controller was great. Of course, my favorite controller was probably the Saturn controller (not the original bulky one but the import version). I played a ton of fighting games so the 6-button layout was perfect.

Good lord why do people go thru all that trouble to doom the 360.

MS as a company profits 2 to 4 Billion $$ a quarter, where as Sega lost 300 million a quarter for years. By the time the Dreamcast hit, SOJ was in debt for close to a billion $$$. MS has close to 70 BILLION $$ in Cash Reserves alone!

MS consoles are here to stay, people better get fuggin used to it beerchug.gif

Another difference is Sega did Not have the power to make the final call, their parent company did. MS doesn't have to worry about that even if they fell into the same scenario.

When Bill Gates tells the world his product will be a success no matter what it costs, I tend to believe it. The pockets are far too deep and they are in for the long haul. They have a plan that leads to 2020, so if your a closet MS hater, too effing bad.

Not to mention their support thruout the Industry is stellar smile.gif

What a load of crap.

Here's some more comparisons:

Both have controller ports.
Both read optical discs.
Both hook up to a TV.
Both make sound effects and graphics on your TV.
Both are affected by gravity.
Both cost money.
Both are electronic.
Both require power.
Both play games.

Need I go on? sleeping.gif

lol, thats good

oh and they listed Pepsi as being DC exclusive promotional partner, and MtDew as 360s exclusive promotional partner. Thats a mistake, as Pepsi was 360s exclusive partner, since Pepsi, MtDew, and Sierra Mist all had everytenminutes points.

everytenminutes was a great promotion. Prolly one of the best for a game system.

Heres 1# of the long list why PS3 will fail: High Price Tag($700-$1000 price range)

people were saying similar things about the ps2 price tag 6 years ago. I don't think the price is gonna be any higher than 450 - 500
