We wrote an FAQ that should answer most of the basic and common questions surrounding videora playback on the Xbox 360.

You can read it here:

Thanks! I'm glad to read that it supports MPEG2 HD streams aswell, I wasnt counting on that at all knowing how MS loves their WMV.

If you could elaborate on one point though, can you play videos (the supported types) off a home burnt DVD-R, so say you could cut an mpeg2 .ts into DVD sized chunks.

And can you play music and view pictures off a external USB hard drive?

No, you cannot play videos files off of a CD-R/DVD-R or an external hard drive through Media Center or the Dashboard.

You should be able to play music and view pics off any external USB device (mp3 player, camera, hard drive, etc).

I just read that list/link and all I can say is... Wow, that sux. Lackluster support of media formats and you have to run MCE. Not too mention the interface is so 2002 Xbox Media Player. I guess it can play a few limited types of HD (i.e. no h.264). Whoopty doo! I guess it's safe to say Xbox Media Center has spoiled us no? I didn't expect as much out of a closed system, but DAMN, it's lame!
