JoyStiq: No Heat Concerns, Fan Noise, Video Controls Lacking -- Posted by XanTium on November 19 23:27 EST
JoyStiq received their press Xbox 360 (retail and debug kit) and posted lots of comments, info and reviews already. Here's some interesting info:
[QUOTE]
* Several readers have asked us if there have been any heat issues with the Xbox 360. We've had the unit on constantly for the last 30 hours, and so far have noticed no overheating issues. The jimongous power supply that ships with the unit is huge in part because it actually contains a fan inside of it. It's hard to quantify the temperature without a thermometer, but we can say that it's certainly no warmer than a typical electronic device.
The Xbox 360 unit itself is a little PC, and puts out a fair amount of warmth, though isn't alarmingly hot to the touch at any spot.

* Here's how the Xbox 360 ranks in terms of noise output versus the other fan-cooled devices in the apartment.
1. Old, clunky refrigerator
2. Xbox 360
3. PlayStation 2 (fat version, not slim-line)
4. Panasonic PT-AE700U projector
5. GameCube
6. Xbox 360 power supply
... see rest of list.

* For the video trailers already loaded onto the 360 hard drive (as well as the ones downloaded earlier), all you get are play, pause, and stop functions. DVD/MPEG-2 videos fare a little better, as some advanced controls were unlocked--such as chapter skip, zoom, and subtitles.
We'd still like to see other common DVD functions, though, like step and any level of fast-forward, slow-mo, or rewind implemented in the movie and music functions of the 360.

After looing at the Joysitq site this article seems to be bit flawed. If it was a truely legitimate experiment, the authors would have at least included decibel readings beside each unit. It seems as this was done by ear, which is different for everyone and very unreliable. Taking this with a MOUNTAIN of salt!

Use a meter next time guys! huh.gif

Good point. I still hear my 1.0 spinning, but my friend with a 1.6 can't hear either of them-his nor mine.

I have so many fans from electrical devices going in my room at all times I would never notice it. The only sound I notice is when they are all off. The silence is deafening!

I'm not buying that "a tad quieter than a 70's refrigerator" either. I expect it to be on par with the quetest home theater projectors - a sound that's easily drowned under any sound from games or movies.

I don't have any iddues with the noise. It is far quieter than the Xbox was. When playing DVD, you can't hear it at all. The fans change speed with the level of activity of hte box, and in an intense game they are louder, but I can't hear them because, as is proper, I crank teh hell out of the game volume.

As to video controls, so what if you can't FF or do other fancy shit with trailers -- they are all liek 2 minute slong. Get a grip. For DVD's the thing has all the same controls as any other top of the line DVD player. And if you use it with Media Center, you get full PVR style controls as expected.

Joystiq isn't happy unless they ar ebitching about something.
