Software Needed:
** Qwix 1.01
** XBEPatcher
** FTP Program of your choice

1). FTP the files from the Game Disc to your PC Hard Drive.
2). Using Qwix, 'Create ISO' with 'Local Folder' as your source.
3). Using Qwix again, Convert ISO. (I had to do this step, first attempts without converting ISO wouldnt work for me..)
4). Using Qwix yet again, Under 'Load ISO' extract the ISO to a folder. (At this point you can delete your ISO's)
5). Run XBEPatcher in the THAW folder.

You now have a working copy of THAW on your PC HD. You can either use Qwix to convert to ISO and transfer it with Avalaunch, or just FTP it to your XBox. This does seem long and somewhat time consuming (making, converting, extracting and making a ISO), but I've had zero problems with my backup this way.

Wont work 100%, the Xbepatcher only picks up on about 2 or 3 of the 110+ long filenames for patching.

It will rename the files for transfer, but somewhere along the way the game will hang when it finds it's missing a file(name) it's looking for.

I've read many threads relating to this exact problem and not just in THAW because there have been a few games along the way with problematic long filenames.

No offence to the poster but what people like yourself are somehow failing to understand is that it is correct that you can copy the files to the xbox by renaming or truncating the longfilename(s) to one(s) that is(are)shorter and the game may APPEAR to run perfectly.... but only upto the point when the game calls upon the particular filename that is long and then it will Hang with a DDE. Now this may be a long way into the game or not but except for a few rare cases it does happen. Gun is one of the exceptions because the program code does not care about the few missing characters of the filename when it is truncated.

I have not got THAW but knowing there are hundreds of longfilenames you can bet your bottom dollar that at some point the game will be relying on the full name which is only available if you backup onto a dvd and NOT if you run the game from Hard Drive. I wish it weren't so but it is unfortunately.

cheers jo.

I know it wont work 100% with the XBEPatcher.. thats why you use Qwix to convert the ISO.. that was the problem I was having when I skipped the step (as noted in the original post) I have completed the Story and Classic mode with ZERO problems, Freeskate with zero problems and Create a Skater mode with zero problems. Only thing I havent done was Create a Park mode..

The -KEY- step is using Qwix to convert the ISO. If you run XBEPatcher without that step, it trys (and fails) to rename about 130 files... Once you run the Qwix converter XBEPatcher will only change about 5 of them and succeed.

[Edit]: The reason I made this post was because I was pretty sure that no one used the 'Convert ISO' button in Qwix. As both of the above posters failed to mention it in their posts, I'm even more sure now. Just give it a shot.. what's the worst that will happen? You end up giving one more shot to copying a game to the HD.. Best case, it works and this is a solution to all/mostlong-filename games.. I'm just tryin to help out here by letting people know what worked for me.

@Stabby_McTwist: I'm not trying to be smart but I seriously doubt that Qwix is patching this game to fix long filenames, the 100+ files that are not being patched by Xbepatcher are deep within the game, most of them are referenced by a checksum file, so a patch might be a long time coming (PPF maybe, but not a simple ACL fix)

If you want to run this game 100% then rip direct from DVD to the PC or use Driveimage Utils on a softmod HDD.

I didn't come here to argue/debate weather or not my way works or not. I found something that worked for me (Maybe I've got a super enhanced x-tra special super seekrit limited edition t3h h4x3d XBox and Modchip.. maybe not..) and came here to share it. If it works.. great.. if not.. oh well.. just one more thing to try before giving up. I'm not forcing you to use it. I'm not holding a gun to your head and saying 'Use this or die'. If you don't want to try it.. don't. If you think it wont work.. fine. but the facts are:
  1. Using JUST Qwix DID NOT WORK - Game crashed outside the Ranch.
  2. Using JUST XBEPatcher DID NOT WORK - No changes were made to the files, it failed.
  3. Using BOTH Qwix and XBEPatcher lets me complete the Story, Classic and Free Skate modes from the HD.
I haven't really tested Create a Skater (I haven't used each and every item on a character.. used every move.. tested every tag.. etc), but so far it works for the character I made. I also have not touched Create a Park mode.

You can tell me that Qwix won't fix it.. You can tell me that XBEPatcher won't fix it..
But I know I have a working copy running from my Hard drive.

I backed up wasteland with DVD2Xbox most recent version and it renamed all the files. I have played the game and beat story mode and have all the freeskate levels, no problems, so the game can be backed up with dvd2xbox for sure.

I have a X3 chip. Do I need to use this patcher still?

Yes, you would still need to use the XBEPatcher, it wouldn't matter what kind of mod you use.
You can also use DVD2XBox 0.7.1, but I've heard that it didn't work for everyone (which is why I wrote this guide as an alternative)

This may sound wierd but it depends on what Dash you have. There was a similar issue with NFS: MW. I've done both of these games with dvd2xbox0.7.1 and UnleashX and they both work fine.
