Yeah has somebody made 1 that works they can sell? this sounds promising ikew i held onto the paper weight for a reason..

This works like a charm but I would recommend building your own or it might be a bit pricey. The prototypes I have built comes to around $40 each for my cost (Granted that is with all the cables so it's a complete unit and if it was mass produced then it would be cheaper. Also if I cut down on a bunch of connections and direct soldered the wires to the board then it will reduce it even more.)

I also found that the USB doesn't put out the current needed so I did have to connect through one of the power molex (The Max232 sucks a lot of current and drops the 5V down to 1.6V when connected to a USB port, switching to a power molex's 5V there was no issue.).

Thanks so much TKramka. I only just checked the site yesterday and found your post. And big thanks to cyd0g for the effort you made in doing the tutorial,,, three drives gave their lives for a worthy cause,,,at least I hope so. laugh.gif
When I got into the drive it is giving an err=001D as soon as it boots, so I couldn't use your commands which were locked out. Did your dead drives give an error code? No matter, I never knew there was a serial access to a drive and I tried out lots of other commands in that list since the drive was a writeoff anyway.

173 hits and still going... it's popular.

You do know you can get the MAX232 chips for free right? "Free Samples." The company (in this case, Ti) thinks youre going to sample the chips, then buy more from them. I think you can get up to ten at once. Ive got some on the way smile.gif

Yeah, I have done that a few times and the MAX232 is not a great expense anyway, just $0.25 each when I got them. The killer for me was playing with PCB prototyping (Which I wanted to anyway so it was just an excuse wink.gif ) and all the fancy connectors I wanted on it.

If I just used a punch board with standard capacitors and IC without custom cables then I would say that it shouldn't cost more than $7.00 US with taxes and shipping (If relevant). I just wanted to make something that will handle the wear and tear of 50+ connections, simple to use and easy to store... OK, I just wanted to play...

I'll post a few pics of the boards, I really wish I could of got the current out of the USB that I needed but saylavi and I'm now adapting molex splitters to work.

Hi All,

I have realised this electronics circuit but look It don't work for me :-((( : I have MAX232N in the circuit

In In Hyperterminal windows I Have only This :

######################################

Interface task reset 1024k x 16 buffer
SVC Code/Device Mismatch

T>
T>/2
2>S006b
Invalid Entry
2>

######################################

when I connect the power plug on the HD:

The display go directly at prompt " T>" without typing key CTRL Z

Only the command /2 looks to works.

But the others don't work .

Whats's Wrong ?

Thanks in advance

Jean

A few things come to mind right now.

First since it is not recognizing the drive offhand then I'm thinking that the wire sequence is wrong. By adding commands without it being properly recognized you can very easily destroy the drive then it doesn't matter what else you do.

You also could have a damaged drive to start with.

PS In responds to my previous post, here is a link to some pics of the PCB's I'm playing with.

Ooh, made by a pro, puts my RS protoboard to shame, in its lame project box... The only perk is the built in PS, but that just adds to the size.

lol...

Like I mentioned before, I did it more to play than to be practical but ain't that the whole point of modding wink.gif

Glad to, anything else you need hosted just ask. Already these directions have been a great aid to me, now if I could get the time to improve the way I built mine...

I coded a $2.00 628 pic to pull this off I'll probably release the hex for free when done. Oh you might need an external oscilator and 2 resistors. I'm trying 2 clock speeds in testing maybe the internal osc will work. This wont have hyperterm feedback it will blink an led if it times out or light the led steady when done or something. Very down and dirty.
