Ok! I have probed some spot on the xbox 360 MB board with the fluke. I found pic's of on this site about 5v and 12v spots the ones that say there 5v but none are. Can you post some pic's, and show me a good safe 5v point on the USB ports. I'll just take power and ground off PUC plug there are some good pic's on that.

Ok.

The problem I have is that my original Fan Connection (the one on the Motherboard doesnt allow any power to go through the Red wire) so for the past 5 Months I have been using the 12v output into the Red wire, with the Brown wire remaining in its normal place.

Now, what Im peeved off at is the noise!

Is there any way I can get the Brown Wire to supply both the Brown and Red wires with power to power my fans, or should I go for the 5v output, and if so, will it be significantly quieter?

Ignore my last reply.

I tried to edit it, but it wont let me:

I had a problem with my Fan. It stopped transmitting power through the red wire.

So I have connected the Red wire (by extending it) to a 12v source located underneath the DVD-Drive.

Now, the Ground is still in the same place as it was originally (the only wire I cut was the red one.)

If I move the Ground wire to a 5v source, (I particularly like the big strip in the picture below) it will reduce the 12v fan down to 7v, thus making my machine quieter, yet still will perform the same?

Or can I make my Brown wire power both the Red and the Brown.

Excuse my crap knowledge of this.

Ok, sounds like one of the fan transistors simply blew. If you try to run both fans from the brown wire, it'll blow too, so you should stick to other sources of power. I suggest running it at 7v. 12v in, 5v out, and it should by all means perform just fine, as long as your 360 wasn't having any overheating problems to begin wtih.

That sounds about right. I had a 360 before hand from Cash Converters, but I took it back as soon as one of the fans stopped. lol. Got me money back and got a brand new one. The same thing happened and I was well miffed!

So, Ive posted pictures in this topic, and also a little more detail so if you can help any, then that would be really appreciated. smile.gif All I am really looking for now, is a safe 5v spot so I can keep using the 12v spot I am using right now. And with the fan being a Talismoon Whisper fan, its got LEDs and the Fan, so I didnt really know what specification it needs and what category it fell under.

I hope this doesn't sound too noobish - I am not inexperienced with soldering and such and I have successfully made the 12v stock fan mod. I used a 25w needle point iron. I originally wanted to use the 12v source that is under the MB where the power supply connection is, but no matter how long I hold the tip to those connections, it just doesn't make the solder flow. Am I missing something? Should I use a more powerful iron? I did manage to get the 12v source from the original 12v mod tutorial. The solder reluctantly stayed on the connection and I had to gingerly tape it with elec. tape. Any advise would be helpful! Thanks.

With thanks to Sinister Slipknot, I got mine to do it perfectly.

The reason your Solder wont ment it is because Microsoft use Grade A materials, basically, Industrial Strength.

So what You have to do is dab some solder onto it, let it dry, then solder the wire onto the dry solder of yours. Its should stick OK then.

All the best. I have done mine so any more help you may need, I can help you a little.

Is there any particular type of solder that will 'stick' better than others? I use a non-lead containing solder and it seems to have very weak holding ability. I did get it to stick, but i am afraid the connection will come loose quite easily. Oh and thanks for tha info!

Hey, i have a question, i took my xbox 360 stock fans off, cut the 4 wires, and i wanted to use another source than the machine to give them power, the thing is that i've tried them with 2 different sources and the fans don't spin(with 12 volts), i don't know if i did something wrong or what, but the just won't sping, i'm driving myself crazy, don't know what to do.Was i supposed to cut the 3 wires off? or did i broke them, both coolers have 2 wires, i don't know why it's not working, any help/advice would be appreciate it! Hmm odd predicament. Maybe you had them wired wrong? The red and brown wires should go to 12v, the black and blue to ground. Is that how you have them wired?

Get some flux... smear the flux on the area you want the solder to stick to... dip the end of your wire in the flux and let some solder wick up into/on it... hold the tinned wire against whatever your soldering the wire to (the area in which you applied the flux) and heat - voila! strong connection.
