The 12v mod causes the fans to run faster, therefore moving more air, and cooling the 360 better.

Hello all,

I resurrected a 360 using my own jackleg methods of clamping down on the CPU and GPU (don't ask how, it was very un-scientific) and wired the fans to a 12V source. It has been working fine but as we all know it is very loud.

I was thinking of just dropping the voltage to 8 or 9 volts by adding a resistor. Does anyone know what value it should be? I don't know how much current the fans draw at 12V so I figured I'd better ask around.

I have both fans wired for 12V and wanted to keep both of them running faster than stock. I have heard of the 7 volt mod but really thought I might need more voltage given that this unit had heat sinks clogged with dust and got very hot.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

you could have the fans running on the stock speed but also add an additional fan to the heat sink which would keep it cooler.

Just like the one below:

I'm with you on this one. I'm afraid I'd bugger up the full system my doing something i shouldn't.

If we change the X360's stock fans voltages from 5 to 12, fans life cycle will reduce. will this make problems in long term?

camster07 - 3 small 50mm fans bro. how would it be better than if you had your stock fans installed and the intercooler? you would have internal fans pulling air and your junk intercooler (5 fans). show us some temps with and without to prove your theory.

not trying to bash your idea, but i just dont believe this is any better..

I have a big problem, I did the 12v mod, but now my power supply is shot. But i was able to play for many hours before anything happened to it. I just tried to turn the system on this morning and nothing happened. (which scared the crap outta me =( .. ) I know it's not the system because i tried the power supply(brick) on another system and it still wont boot.

My concern here is that by doing the 12v mod it may put to much stress on the power supply.

And no i didn't screw anything up, I'm an engineer with some minor electrical background, so I do know what I'm doing.

But in any event the fans only pull .4 Amps a piece. And off the 12v DVD wire I don't see how it would mess anything up in the power supply. Seeing as .8 amps are taken away from the draw of the original plug but added to the 12v supply. Which in turn if anything would go wrong it would occur within the system itself and not the power supply.

If anyone has any ideas, or comments, or if you think my power supply was just old,.. please let me know.

Oh and btw i do agree that the 12v fans are really loud,. but if your turn up the sound system,.. well, i can't hear the fans anymore =) and i think thats better than a system that freezes up all the time.

QUOTE
If you want 1 or both of the fans to run at 7v, then cut the BLACK and BLUE wires, and solder them to a 5v source on one of the USB plugs.

According to this post, there is no meaningful difference for GPU temperature whether stock fans run at 12 (11.7), 10, 9 or 8 volt when airflow divider is being used.
So if I want both fans to run at 9v (to be more exact 8.7v), then I should cut the BLACK and BLUE wires, then solder them together, then solder a third wire to that, and finally solder the other end of the third wire to the DVD 3.3v power source*?

*DVD Power is not safe? What 3.3v power source would you suggest?
