Well, it's about time I did a 360!

I'm gonna try really hard and not make this like the other Xboxes we've seen. I've got some new and innovative ideas...just a matter of implementing them smile.gif As is my style, I'm going to ignore the subtle classy lighting in favor of the burning out your retinas type of lighting. World's Brightest Xbox 360, here we come!!

All I've done so far is laid out the cuts.

IPB Image

I thought this was interesting...nobody's shown anything like this.

The DVD drive is TINY! You can see from this picture that it's only a little larger than an S controller.

I'll get more pictures up later tonight.

It's later tonight!

Wow. This plastic is AMAZING. It is completely tearing through my dremel cutoff wheels. The most wheels I've ever broken in one project is probably somewhere around 5. I lost count around 10, and I just did two tiny windows!

Here are the cuts roughed out.

IPB Image

After changing the dremel wheel for the 10th time, I plugged it in and turned it on, and it immediately shut off. I can't get it to turn back on! I think my dremel may have just died! I thought a bearing or something was going, because it's really, really loud, and it is hard to turn the bit manually. Does anyone know if these have a replaceable fuse on them somewhere?

the plastic in the xbox 360 is pretty tough but not if you do it right rolleyes.gif
but i used heat to cut my case
a black and decker 100/50/30/15 switchable watt iron with interchangeable tips (<-- my baby biggrin.gif )
i used a tapered blade
and my cut required almost no sanding (only a small part that did not go through all the way)
and i have a dremel lithium ion pack and sometimes it overheats and if i leave it sit for 15 min it is fine
P.S. the 360 plastic when hot has one of the most worst smells i have ever smelled and i have done a lot of plastic work in my time
(i even put a window in my sony 5 disc dvd changer to see the discs sliding around)
oh and just to give you an idea i hollowed out the letters "xbox 360" on a friends unit and put a light cold cathode behind it and it is one of the most sexy things i have ever seen
(too bad i put a window on both sides of my system)
but it looks like you are keeping your logo intact so you should try that
you may also want to do what i did on my personal unit and paint all the internal components with clear uv light reactive clearcoat
then hide a uv light inside the unit
the effect is everything glows without a light source being visable blink.gif
hope i helped and gave you some good ideas

Sounds pretty sweet. I was actually planning on doing the logo thing you mentioned, kinda...the hollowing out part, anyways. How did you do that? With your uber fancy tool?

Like I said...the UV thing is cool, but it's not blinding your retinas bright smile.gif

my tool is just a pimped out soldering iron
it has 10 diffrent tips of all shapes and sizes
the one i used was like the tip of a xacto knife but only it was made to fit in the end if this iron so it heats up
sharp xacto + 500 degrees = the cases worst nightmare
and for the 2 openings i used a 45 angle tapered tip to make a clean straight cut
and as for your light endevors use leds over 10,000 mcd and cold cathodes
and use blue, red, yellow, or white as they are the brightest of all lights
and maybe if you do what i did and cut out both sides of the case you can also put lights under the mb like i did
you also have vents all around the unit including the top and bottom plates
but i cannot wait for a full case clear replacement then i am going to put fiber optics and a halogen lamp in it
all i can say is it will be blue and BRIGHT
and that soldering iron is made by black and decker it is called a "four temp craft iton"
(i know the name is lame) and you can get it at any builders home depot or any home maintence store for $20
(makes a great christmas gift laugh.gif )

Quick update before Christmas Eve Dinner smile.gif

I've got the windows cut nice and square. Pretty happy with how that turned out so far. I dunno why it looks metallic...it's got a thin coat of primer on it.

IPB Image

Faceplate is primered, and ready for painting. I didn't tape off the memory card slots, so we'll see how it turns out :/

IPB Image

The side vents have been painted metallic flake black, and are currently drying.

The side panels have a little primer on them.

Here's my makeshift "wind tunnel" smile.gif Two box fans makes drying go fast!

Merry Christmas to all!

nice cuts, I hate seeing people make window mods with jagged edges

oh, and you sure thats a good idea to fan off the paint? I usually get dust particles on the paint when using fans.

Yeah, using a fan can yeild some sucky results. I've found that out the hard way. You get something painted perfect, leave it to dry, and the fan blows dust or little bugs in it, but it's too late because the paint dry

sometimes if you leave a case to close to the fan it can make the paint run, as i found out..

Thanks for the replies, guys. Just to clear something up -

The fans are only used to dry water off the surface, after wetsanding. After they are dry, I use tackcloth to pick up anything that I may have missed, or that may have blown onto the surface. Then it's a thin coat of paint, and it gets airdried in the sunroom just off my house. (The paint fumes give my mom headaches, so this room is sealed, with fans blowing to outside. Pretty slick)

If a fan is making your paint run, that's either way too much paint, or way too much fan...

I'm going to my grandparent's for the day, so I won't get anything done, sadly enough. I have 3-4 color coats on the faceplate, and it looks gorgeous. I'll get pictures either late tonight or tomorrow, and hopefully get this thing completely back together and on eBay by the end of this week!
