CoolIT Systems Retrofit Liquid-Chilled Cooling System for Xbox 360 -- Posted by XanTium on December 29 21:14 EST
From the press release:
[QUOTE]
CALGARY, Alberta/EWORLDWIRE/Dec. 29, 2005 --- CoolIT Systems Inc. today announced that it is showcasing the world's first truly liquid-cooled Xbox 360 in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show from Jan. 4 - 8, 2006.

The retrofitted Xbox 360 will be on display at the CoolIT Systems booth 70556 in The Sands Expo Center throughout the duration of the CES Show. The display will feature a side-by-side comparison of the CoolIT MTEC liquid-chilled Xbox 360 to the standard Xbox 360 to demonstrate superiority for temperature, noise level and ultimate performance.

"Whether it's a PC or gaming console, the avid gamer is constantly raising the bar for performance," said Geoff Lyon, CEO of CoolIT. "It's now obvious that only the most technologically advanced cooling system will be capable of keeping up with the heat production of today's CPUs and GPUs. The exclusive MTEC technology allows us to provide enormous cooling power in a very compact form factor suitable for maintaining stable temperatures and ensuring optimum performance."

The Microsoft Xbox 360 has been the topic of much discussion since its release on Nov. 22, 2005. Aside from its limited supply through Christmas and fantastic gaming abilities, many headlines have been about problems related to the excessive thermal output of Microsoft's latest gaming console product.
To provide gaming consumers with a high performance option, CoolIT Systems has designed a retrofit product that will transform the stock forced air cooling system with a state-of-the-art liquid-chilled system that employs the exclusive MTEC technology pioneered by CoolIT Systems.

Yeah, the drink cooler caught my attention more than anything. I am a usb-toy nut (case in point -- I own the USB mini desktop acquarium, usb mini lava lamp, etc.).

But anyhow, I am quite annoyed they call this the "World's First" since there have been some on the net and eBay.

Now I'll admit the ones I've seen seem to be pretty juvenile and sloppy jobs but they were "truely liquid cooled" and the first, not this one by this company (unless they made it a month ago but kept it under wraps but come on).

This is fine for modders but it should not have to be this way. How about a console that does not have to run hot enough to justify a third party water cooled solution? Single core CPUs in desktop computers run too hot, Intel was reaching a barrier with their last single core P4 CPUs. An attributed benefit of multicore CPUs is that you can "do more" at slower clock speeds, making them more powerful yet at reasonable temperatures. So why does so much heat come out of the back of MS's X360? I think it has to do with the 3 core CPU and GPU being in very close proximity. The X360 is the loudest electronic device in my room even when not running the fan at 12v. I'll wait till reviews, and I can not see the liquid cooling device not working as it should, it will probably be a neat device. That said, people should not have to mod their fans to run at constant 12v or buy third party cooling solutions to keep their system at reasonable temperatures unless they absolutely want to for the "cool" factor (no pun intended), or have wanton amounts of cash they like to spend on items for their X360 that does not include games, which to most people, is what the system is primarily for in the first place.

Cool deal.
I would like to see pictures of it installed and how hard it is to install it so that I can put it into mine.
Voiding the warranty is not a problem since they could do like the company with the DreamX XBOX which is modified on the CPU.

Amen.

400 dollars for the PC version ohmy.gif What do you think the 360 will cost? blink.gif
It's ridiculous that I need to quite down my own hardware even with PC's. The XBOX360 is too damn noisy and M$ should be shot for that. I mean they advertised with it being liquid cooled already giving the impression that it would be quite.

Apart from the noise it makes I really like the XBOX360.

I'd like to know how much of a difference it makes, because isn't the DVD drive a pretty big factor in the sound as well? If it wasnt too expensive I'd be willing to do the mod, after my warranty is expired. Considering I've already had some artifacting (not too many occasions, and nothing a restart wont fix) I'll be trying to get mine replaced once they start shipping updated systems, since it's only a matter of time before they redesign some elements.
