Liquid-Chilled Xbox 360 Cooling System Pictures and Info -- Posted by XanTium on December 31 11:45 EST
Thursday we posted about a new product from CoolIT Systems, a retrofit liquid-chilled cooling system for Xbox 360, that they will be showcasing in Las Vegas at the CES2006 from Jan. 4 - 8, 2006. Check here if you missed the news.
The guys at tgdaily.com posted more info and what are probably the first pictures of how the liquid cooling solution looks like in action:
[QUOTE]
Geoff Lyon, chief executive of CoolIT Systems, explained that the liquid cooling multiple thermo-electric coolers, which he calls MTECs, to chill the anti-freeze solution. The liquid then is pumped past both the Xbox 360's main and graphics processor. "Basically, the Xbox 360 cooler is an updated and modified version of our Freezone PC coolers," said Lyon.

While the liquid cooled Xbox 360 is a prototype, Lyon told us that it could become a retail product and adds, "At CES we will be gauging interest to see if we can go retail." Assuming the product goes retail, Lyon says that it may be sold as a retail customer kit, complete with tools and instructions for taking apart the Xbox 360, or as a unit to system integrators. "If we go to market, the cooler will likely take both forms," says Lyon.

"If" they go to market?

Who'd even buy this? I think the folks at MS have done a good enough job at keeping the 360 cool. Mine hasn't overheated once, but I have it in a ventilated area.

I just can't imagine why someone would buy something like this, when you could argue that if your 360 is overheating, you need to give it more ventilation, or it's defective. The last thing I'd think of is, "I ought to buy a big, bulky, and expensive liquid cooling system for it".

I think msft did a great job with the cooling, mine hasnt overheated once. You have to remember that there are 3 cores in there running at 3.2Ghz and the fan that cools them is 2-3in away. If they would have had more room then they could have put a traditional HSF on it where the fan is on top but they didnt want to have a massive box. If this does go to retail i cant see to many people buying it because it will void the warrenty, and if your xbox is overheating for some reason and its not your fault, and the xbox is truly defective you can just get a new one. It might be something else wrong with it besides that.

Yes.. Lets all void what little warrenty comes with the system or if you buy a longer one, and make the 360 a big bulky system that looks odd no matter were you place it.... this is a very baaaaaaaaad idea..... i cant imagin how much this prototype cost to make... what a waste of time and money, and yet there will still be somebody out there that will buy it and think its the coolest thing ever... blink.gif

Well, it's supposedly quieter, but still. It's huge and unnecessary.

There's no point in tec cooling your 360 unless you plan to overclock it.

I wish it was! If it was, then it wouldn't get so damn hot. I'm kinda dissapointed because everyone wanted a freakin small, quiet system that they had to put everything so close together and on top of each other and then turn the fans at like freakin 10 RPM so it's ULTRA QUIET just to please everyone. I would MUCH rather have a loud sytem and have it be well cooled. I am definately looking at water cooling my 360 sometime in the future because I think that it actually does need to be. The original XBOX didn't need to be water cooled, just a simple fan upgrade and maybe the Arctic Silver 5 if you wanted to. Now don't flame me and say I'm a hater or a PS3 fanboy or whatever cause trust me I'm not. I LOVE XBOX and I absolutely HATE Sony.

Thank You. Thats the main reason watercooling was used in PC's.

alright so...didn't MS mandate that every xbox 360 accessory must be approved by M$ themself? If so, this has absolutely no chance of coming to market....
