Not sure if this is the right forum....been searching for an answer for 2 hours now here and abroad...

Just modded a friends box....

V1.0
Thompson Drive
Duox2 Cromwell (white version)

Here is what I've done...problem to follow...
duox2 cromwell flashed to x2 5032: OK
bootable to original ms and burned evox: OK
backed up c and e drives via ftp: OK
swapped HD with new 160gb: OK
booted X-wizard 3.0 Auto Installer, formatted new HD: OK
installed Avalaunch as default dash: ok
reconfiged Avalaunch net settings, locked HD: OK
installed apps/programs, namely DVD2XBOX: OK

Now...here is the problem...

If I go into DVD2XBOX, it will not read an original xbox (retail) disc. If I use a burned disc (like the autoinstaller or bios disc) it will recognize it.

Avalaunch file manager also does not recognize a retail copy of a game in the drive nor does it show a CD icon.

If I boot into the original bios, it gives a "Not a valid game disc, dvd, cd error".

If I boot with the x2 bios and a retail game in the drive, it DOES load the game and play.

So...the only time the game is readable is when I boot the x2 bios with the game in the drive.

Anyone have any clue what this might be?

Here is what I did to troubleshoot....

1: Verified cable select jumper used on new HD.
2: Checked cables
3: Restarted xbox numerous times.
4: Reinstalled original (unmodified, does not have hacked dash) Xbox HD and tested with that, same problem.

Since it boots via x2 bios and I can read my burned dvd-r's, it doesn't seem to be a drive issue (or cable issue).

I'm ruling out bad/corrupt dashboard since I tried the original drive too and the problem remains.

Any other ideas?

My friend has this problem im still confused about it but we have been looking but no luck yet we tried cleaning lens new lens and compressed air cleaning lots of stuff and still nothing. it might be the disc it self though you might want to check.

Actually...tried numerous retail discs....all do the same thing. Now I did forgot to lock the drive and I booted to ms bios with the network cable still in (no big deal to me cause won't be using live). I got the "xbox needs service" error.

I locked the HD and that wen't away.

However, even if that DID screw up my ms dash...it doesn't explain why the discs would not be readable in Avalaunch after booting from the x2.

I have a similar problem: DVD-drive (D:) won't read certain original retail disk. In particular, World Championship Poker 2 and Guns, didn't work on either XBMC or the Original Xbox dash. (message: no disk) When I pop in older games like Top Spin, the thing reads just fine. Any suggestions??

Please help.

I don't have the answer yet. I'm going to do the following as soon as I get a chance...

1: Try different dvd drive
if that isn't it...

2: Try different bios
if that isn't it...

3: Try different dash
if that isn't it...

4: Tell my friend his xbox is teh sux0rz and that he should just buy a new one smile.gif

My problem seems to be disk-specific. All I've tried so far are all retail disks. Some works and some doesn't. I have backed-up over 50 games to the hdd. this is the first time this's happened. I doubt it's the drive mechanic or software problem because it works on many retail disks. I'll keep trying on other games later this week.

I don't know how exactly, but this has to be related to the mod-chip install. Can you just double check all the soldering, make sure you got the right points and didn't splash any solder where it shouldn't be.

Something is being grounded or powered when your switching the chip off that seems to be effecting the drive comm's .... weird blink.gif

Yeah, it certainly could be the Tommy. Those POS drives are notorious for failure.

If it's the drive then why is the bios/mod-chip affecting whether it reads or not??

I know Tommy's are a POS (I'm a proud owner of one myself), but this just doesn't sound right to me... I would get a loan of someone elses DVD to try it first b4 I spent any money on a drive, besides a new drive is nearly the cost of new Xbox these days.

Bought my new Thomson drive from aliuy.com for $29.00+shipping. They seem to have a pretty good record on Ebay.

I get my spare parts for free smile.gif

I haven't messed with this again just yet....spent a whole day on it and frankly got fed up. If I have time this coming weekend I'll let you know my results from testing new DVD/bios/dash.

Also I checked the MB thoroughly for solder splash and cut traces....but may be worth another check.
