1up Interview with Peter Moore
-- Posted by XanTium on January 19 19:08 EST
EGM (via 1up) posted a new interesting and pretty 'aggresive' interview with Peter Moore, the Corporate Vice President of Worldwide Retail Sales and Marketing for Microsoft's Home and Entertainment Division (translation: He has to make Xbox 360 the #1 console in the world). Here's an excerpt: [QUOTE] * EGM: Wouldn't you be pissed if you paid $400 for a new console and many of its games looked only marginally better than their current-gen equivalents? * PM: You wanna call out some games? Because I'm not gonna call out any games.
* EGM: But let's look at the PS1 generation and the jump to Dreamcast. On all levels, no matter which games you look at, you can immediately see a huge improvement in graphics. With a lot of 360 games, the leap isn't there, don't you agree? * PM: That's an opinion that I don't share, but look at it [this way]...we're selling games at an unprecedented rate; we're breaking records. Clearly, consumers are happy about something. And I think it's not just people looking at the graphics. Where people are really excited is the online experience, the Marketplace experience, Xbox Live Arcade, and being able to join Xbox Live Silver for no charge and no credit card. You can't just pinpoint and say the graphics in Gun don't look good, therefore the entire ecosystem's got a problem. Gamers are smarter than that. They're looking at the entire experience. They also know games will continue to look better, if looking good is one of their higher criteria, which it typically is. But there are enough greatlooking games out there to combat that, if you're looking for graphics. You know, people have to make their own choices, and if they determine that this is not worth their 400 bucks, then it does seem like there's somebody in line behind them that does think it is.
* EGM: The machine's awfully loud, isn't it? * PM: Hmm...you've got a lot going on there. I mean, I have not noticed it, and you know one of the cores will shut down when you're watching a movie on it, so I have noticed [the noise] once I get into gameplay. When it first cranks up, like a lot of things, the fans get going and off you go, but you've got a lot of power, you've got a lot of heat, and what you're hearing is the drive or the fans maybe--those things have to work. Again, that's another thing that nobody seems to be concerned about. [/QUOTE]

I'm tempted to putting the unit in another room. Thank the local Hydro company that I can crank my stereo to over power the fan noise. And I'm not much for Live either. Tried it on the xbox. Too many idiots let loose. I just wanted to play online with like minded people. But everyone had to have an attitude. And why pay for it? You never had to do that with the PS2 and a lot of stuff on the PC. What about the Dreamcast? Wasn't it free as well? MS thinks there are so high and mighty. I just want to have fun playing good games. This post has been edited by xboxweasel: Jan 20 2006, 01:24 AM

I saw this a bit ago in EGM and agreed completely with their statements on the jumps, i mean think back a bit...
Atari 2600 to NES? NES to Genesis? Genesis to PS1/Saturn/N64? N64/Saturn/PS1 to Dreamcast? Dreamcast to Xbox? ok, this is arguable, but i think the jump from Soul Calibur to Amped was huge! (i know i know DOA2 looks sweet on DC but still...)
Xbox to 360? ok we all know that games will start taking more advantage of the hardware but it just doesn't have that "WOW" factor that all the other generation jumps have had...

QUOTE(BasicAir @ Jan 20 2006, 02:04 AM) Wow, I used to have a TON of respect for EGM. I just lost most all of it. This work of 'journalism' they demonstrated in this interview is very unprofessional. Things like "wouldn't you be pissed if...." as the lead to a question is overly agressive, unprofessional, and shows no respect and little intelligence. ............ But back to the point -- This piece of journalism is pathetic. It's more like an interrogation of an Al Queda suspect than anything else and sorry folks, but that is pathetic.
I couldn't agree more. Although, I am glad they're not afraid to ask Moore the questions everyone been wanting to ask him (Or demand from him) the way they interview him is unacceptable. Also, they literally treat the guy like crap, I knew if I got to interview him, I wouldn't be talking to him as they were. I am not saying he deserves to be treated like royalty, but come on. For such a well-respected company to interview they're guests as such is just insane, and this goes for any guests for that matter. Anyways, I am excited about they're future launch titles after the period of 6 months. GoW and Mass Effect are right up there for me. I don't know about you guys, but I think Halo 3 is getting more attention it deserves. The game was good, but not "THAT" good. Anyways the future looks bright for MS.

EGM is what gamepro used to be; ie. a joke, sellout, and i have more respect for gamepro, now.
If any were fans of the magazines "gamefan", or "gamers republic" they would do well to check out "Play Magazine". It's editor in chief, Dave Halverson, is the same for all three mags. He rates Kameo as the best of 360, giving it a 9.5. Plus, his journalism, and way with words are second to none.

QUOTE EGM: OK, we're going to throw two games at you at a time, and we want you to tell us which one you like better.
PM: Ugh, just like saying which of my kids do I love more.
EGM: We hope we've made these easy for you. So: Splinter Cell Chaos Theory or Sneakers?
PM: [Laughs] Well, as fond as I was of Sneakers, I have to say that Splinter Cell probably [tops] it.
EGM: How about Soul Calibur II or Kabuki Warriors?
PM: Well, that would be Soul Calibur II.
EGM: Next: Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball or Barbie Horse Adventures: Wild Horse Rescue?
PM: Ah, Xtreme Volleyball...anything that [Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu] Itagakisan does is always a big favorite with me. He's always been a big supporter of the platform, and it would be disloyal for me not to choose his title.
EGM: So here's what we're getting at: You picked three Xbox 1 games that aren't backwards compatible on the Xbox 360, and the other ones—Sneakers, Kabuki, and Barbie—are. It's a weird list, especially when you exclude the heavy hitters.... I thought this part was pretty clever. I kind of agree with the graphics being meh. I would rather have a new gameplay experience than higher resolution textures.
