Ok. Here is the deal. I have cut a hole in the top of my xbox 360 under the hdd to access the dvd rom sata easier without having to open the case everytime I want to back up a game. Now, I have recently recieved the 3 light problem also. I have figured out my error code is 0020. The problem is unkown for that code with a possibility of overheating. I unplugged my xbox and set it in front of a box fan for about 30 minuets. Then i plugged it back in and WALLAH!. Still red lights. Humm. What could it possible be I wondered. So I put my fingers through the hole that I had cut and unplugged the sata cable from the dvd rom and plugged it back in. When I tried to turn it back on, the same thing happened. Then, I put my fingers back in the hole and unplugged the sata cable from the dvd rom again, but this time I left it unplugged. Then I turned the console back on and BAM. It started right up. No red lights. But, of course I could not read any disks because I had it unplugged. So I turned the xbox off and plugged the sata cable back in the dvd rom and it is working perfect. So, I'm thinking it could have been something to do with the cable mabey. I dunno. But if I get the error again I will post again to tell if the same solution worked. I do not recomment opening your case to try this if you have not opened it already because it will void your warrenty. And I don't think the console has been out for a year yet and I believe there is a year warrenty from MS. But I could be wrong on that. Have a good day, and happy hacking. (Or modding) And I don't think that error 0020 is for overheating because it would have been heating up while I was trying all the dvd rom cable removal stuff. Let me know how it goes.

I've just screwed up one of my 360s. I have two 360s but only one HDD. I booted up my TS 360 and realised my hdd was on the other, so like an idiot I plugged in the hdd while the 360 was still on. The HDD is in bits so I think it was part way in, I then pushed the connector in fully. Straight away I got 3 red lights with error code 0020. The 360 had only been on a few min, so I don't think error code 0020 is an overheating error. I've tried the various solutions described at the begining of the thread (unplug etc..), but still get the 3 rings of death. The HDD still works ok in my other 360. I've void my warrenty by flashing the DVD FW, so I'm screwed. So maybe error code 0020 is SATA related.

Hallo,

here the howto video!!
http://www.freepler.de/userdaten/38928917/...air_gun_fix.mpg

and another link of this video, view it at YouTube.com's site!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYv6b7MndJk
PS: I cannot guarantee that it will also work on your xbox360, but hey! it's the last chance to bring your console back to life!!! biggrin.gif

Hey man! Wanted to say thanks for this great idea. I had one die on me just out of waranty and ended up buying another. So after reading your story, I figured I had nothing to lose, so I gave it a try on my dead box with the 0102 error code. I first cracked it open and used a hair dryer, cause it was extremely late, and that was all I had available. Well, it worked, but not for long. (figured I'd give a try since somewhere earlier in this thread someone had luck with the hair dryer, just not me) So the next day I called around and asked a few people if they had a hot air gun I could borrow, but had no luck. So I dropped 25 bucks on one at Home Depot, and gave it a shot. It worked great! I have even hooked it up to another TV in my house, and now have 360 gaming in two rooms now!!!!

Thanks again! YOU THE MAN!

Get the hot air gun, see my post above. To take off that silver heat sink, flip over your board and you'll see two x shaped brackets (i guess thats what you would call it, and only remove the one under the silver heat sink) Anyway, at the end of the four arms of the X you will see what looks like little metal studs in the center of the cutout. I just got a litte flat head screw driver, and pryed out the four studs. Stick your screw driver down into those cutouts, on the side furthest from the center of the X, and just pry the bracket away from the stud. After you get three of these off, the last will just come off by hand. To put it back on, just kinda do this in reverse. Pry them all back on, again, the first one you should be able to get started by hand. Take note, when the heat sink is off, you can see the little indentation running around the top half of the stud, thats where that bracket holds on to the stud, so make sure when you are done, that the bracket is holding on all four of them.

Hey what's up guys?
I've been having a problem with my 360 lately.
I took it apart one day, looked around and put it back together. Soon after I started getting graphics errors in progressively shorter intervals (ex: half hour, then 20 min, then 10, then 5, now it doesnt even get past the dash).
So I took the mobo out and tried the heat gun fix.
It actually made it worse; i get two red led's (overheating) and i did the error code and got 0011.
I tried the heat gun AGAIN. Same thing happened. I have no idea why it says it's overheating even though its room temp, which is 78 degrees.
Any help is appreciated!
I already tried taking off the protective foil(did it) and put the heatsinks back on.
I'm clueless...any ideas?

Hello...I've got a unusual error or flashing light problem that I didnt see a error code for. Wondering if it happened to anybody else. Was playing Chromehounds on Live with a friend who lives literally next door to me. All of a sudden 3 flashing red red lights on console. Now the stranger thing is that is happened to him as well. Now he's been having freezing and lock-up issues with his 360 but I've had mine since the Nov 22nd US launch and its worked perfectly fine. The weather was slightly dismal but I dont remember any lightning or anything like that. He mentioned that his 360 and the tv/receiver its hooked to lost power but I only remember the flashing lights on my 360. However my 360 turned right back on and I played GRAW for 4hrs with no problems. I've got a replacement warranty but am not sure what to do. Anybody heard of anything like this happening? I can understand my 360 alone getting the flashing lights but for it to happen to 2 consoles in different homes at the same time is weird.
