Xbox Live Arcade GM Jabs Nintendo, Sony -- Posted by XanTium on February 3 18:26 EST
From next-gen.biz:
[QUOTE]
Xbox Live Arcade group manager Greg Canessa tells Next Generation that retro downloadable Nintendo games "won't hold up", and as far as a Sony online service goes... "good luck".

On Nintendo's retro service
"I think it was interesting to see Nintendo's announcement for the Revolution downloadable games service which, of course, came over a year after we launched our initiative internally and around nine months after we already launched the first generation of Arcade for Xbox. I think it was a responsive move. Their service is interesting in sort of a 'retro' way, but I view Arcade as being so much more than what they're planning on doing. Their service is kind of a subset of what we're doing. We have a retro coin-op category within Arcade - the Midway titles have been performing amazingly - and we're doing a lot more in that space.

On Sony's online strategy
"If Sony is trying to come at us, you know... 'good luck.' It's going to be really hard for them. It's just a huge engineering challenge, and beyond the engineering challenge, it takes a long time to build a community. Not to mention Arcade, because that has its own set of issues. You have to take time to build an ecosystem and talk to developers and get developers to put out games for that platform and work with them to plug into all of the underlying technologies that need to be in place and making sure it works properly."

Hell, I wish there were more retro games in the Live Arcade's arcade category.
So far, Nintendo's promise sounds tastier to me than Live Arcade's flavor lacking line-up dry.gif

I'm going to buy a Revolution just for downloadable retro games. Doubt I'll buy regular games though.

The Nintendo part sounds much more like a "we wished" thing... They seriously wish they had the retro games idea before nintendo. Sounds much more like they had a crappy product, then got inspired by nintendo to push it.

I felt like it was more nintendo's first move ever since they announed it back at E3. Maybe it was being developped for the 360 at that time, but i have serious doubts.

If live arcade had old genesis (or their arcade counterparts rather) or amiga games or c64, msx2 etc games (to cover all the generations) Greg would be more believable saying stuff about Nintendo.

Lets see, games like sonic, cannon fodder, lemmings, vikings etc. Heck what would piss nintendo off more than having Giana Sisters in there (the game they went to court over for "stealing" mario)

Games like Streets of rage 2 could have live co-op and counter-co-op at the same time so two play heroes and two play the cronies. Same with golden axe (but make it the higher quality arcade version).

Street Fighter is a move to the right direction, the first big-name port of a more contemporary title (gauntlet and smash tv are all good but far older). Lets hope the trend continues, lets say Final Fight arcade version with the co-op and counter-co op over live. love.gif

I agree. Nintendo may have their own games to release but MS will be releasing arcade ports which I will take over nintendos downgraded versions. Now a port of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 would be awesome on Arcade. What about Metal Slug 1/2/3/4/5/X or TMNT Arcade. I know most of us have been playing these to death on our xbox's for a while now but games like this would do great on arcade!

Yea TMNT Arcade.. we played the NES version to death.

Come to think of it, the MAME arcade platform has so many great games that most people dont know about and would perhaps purchase as more novelty than retro, like Cadillacs & Dinosaurs and even that last Golden Axe title (not 3 but 4 or smth).

Nice to know that Greg has absolutely no idea what he's talking about (in regards to Nintendo, at least):

The Satellaview let you download updates to your SNES games, and it was released over 10 years ago (1995). so, Greg, who's copying who? tongue.gif

Well the Saturn had a modem and an IRC client ffs. Not so much downloadable stuff but anyway, connectivity and consoles is not new.

Hah I remember how the saturn clients used to drop out when somebody used colors in the channel. Talk about quality assurance. tongue.gif And yes I bought a saturn at launch for over 500 bucks.

Netlink was great!

Did you hang at the sega chat rooms? I remember those days like it was yesterday *sigh*

The pc'ers would "nuke" us and have their scripts running ph34r.gif

Oh and what did you get for the $500.00? Wasnt it $400 at launch, well without any extras anyways. I think it came with VF 1?

the saturn had an IRC client? i knew it had a floppy drive and modem, but not this feature ph34r.gif
edit: well i didn't own a saturn in those days. just picked one up last year to play hits like nights and all those shmups.

anyway, live arcade is shaping up nicely, but it could definitely use more real arcade games(coin-op section), and there are plenty of good titles from sega, capcom, snk, etc. that would make live arcade much better.
and yeah, streets of rage 2 online would be tooo great biggrin.gif

No online service compairs, has ever compaired, or will compair to Live any time soon, besides maybe pc online gaming that's free, but that still isn't even comparable. With pc gaming you have to worry about cheaters (not that xbl is cheat-free, but more so than pc) and most games don't have voice chat. Then you have to go setup teamspeak or something similar. Also its easier to hookup in games with your buddies on Live.
