Anyone elses xbox sound like a lawnmower when its running a game disc. I thought it was a seriously loud fan at first, but if I eject the disc its quiet again. Then I realized it was just the sound of the DVDrom spooling up...iono, maybe Im just used to my water cooled computer, but this thing seems so loud to me.

Is this normal?

My DVD drive is pretty loud. Not comparable to a lawnmower.

I guess the most annoying part is that it never goes away. I would understand that it would be loud and need super high RPMs for high data rate when it's loading a game...but...it never slows down. Its like driving a car at 9,000rpms all day long. Gets old fast.

What the hell does it need high data rates in the middle of a level for? Music? pffffft.

But the dvd drives are, so DOI (like how women say duh).

And yes the drive spinning at max RPM 24/7 is one of the things in the 360 launch games that makes you go up to the developers and punch them in the mouth for not precaching AT ALL to the HDD.

Like in PGR3 it streams the textures of the track from the DVD constantly, and even though you've already completed a full lap it still keeps hammering the DVD for any subsequent laps you do because it doesnt cache to the HDD at all. AARGGHHH Bizarre you are just begging to be slapped.

But luckily I have the newer drive that especially when horizontal isnt loud at all.. at least not distractingly loud. But somewhat louder when vertical, sort of a mechanical raawwwrr to it but when horizontal its just a smooth whiss.

He may mean the first XBOX, although if you format the HDD (and lose BC capabilities sad.gif it asks for the 360 Serial)

Probably because not all 360's will have the HDD, esp with the people who had to get a Core because of the Premium shortage (although it would have been nice if it could detect the HDD and use it for caching if it was there)

It looks rather poor when racing and and all of a sudden the windows on a building just appear, or you see faceless buildings.

Yup mine also sounds like its going to take off and fly around the room LOL. sad.gif

Maybe MS could slow down the read/spin speed down via a live update or use
the harddrive as a buffer to stop it constantly streaming data or something.
