I'm not sure that this will help but check your bios and make sure there is no floppy drive in the boot up sequence since you say you don't have one installed. It may be trying to find the drive I guess which might I say might give you this error.

Sounds like something could have overwritten your MBR (Master Boot Record). THats the little area on your hard drive which controls the booting of the OS. Win 98 is not the most stable OS so if your were loading driviers and such, could have messed up Win98. Double check all of the physical connections, on the hard drive and on the motherboard, make sure your BIOS is setup correctly(it probably is) if that does not work, you will have to reload win98

as odd as it may seem......make sure your hard drive is spinning up.

i've got a spare pc that has a hd that once in a while has trouble spinning up(its done it for about 2 yrs)....the bios will just give up looking for the hd and start to boot to get the invalid system disk

...theres also the other option(the only repair option for win98) reinstall windows(said jokingly)

as last resort(before reinstalling win98 again)...try to boot using a startup disk for win98 and type "fdisk /mbr" it formats the master boot record and i think uhh.gif it will properly point to the win98 partition(thus is why i said last resort)

Here is another trick, if this is a spare PC, unplug the HD and plug it into your main PC, and see if it boots. If it does, you have either a bad HD that just plain died (which happens) if it does work maybe your mobo died.

The error obviously indicated the boot device has no prescribed boot method.

Since you claimed to have installed win98, try these.

Go into bios (usually delete key or an F key during initial boot sequence)

Look for and disable all floppy drives.
Check and make sure it detects your hard drive.
Set boot sequence to CD-ROM, then Hard Drive (no A: Drive).

Make sure there is no disc in the cd-rom and reboot.

If it doesn't work, stick the 98 install cd in the cd-rom and when it comes up tell it to repair a previous installation. It should re-write your master boot record as well as most system files.
