Microsoft Talks about Xbox 360 DVD Firmware Hack -- Posted by XanTium on March 22 12:02 EST
Microsoft issued a short reply about the Xbox 360 DVD Firmware Hack on the Team Xbox GamersScrore Blog:
[QUOTE]
We've been asked from quite a few of you for a comment about the recent "hacked" Xbox 360. I got the official response for your perusal:

The core security system has not been broken. However, it is reported that the authentication protocol between the optical disc drive and the console may be attacked, which if accurate could allow people to play illegally copied games. Our security team is aware of this and we are investigating potential solutions to this issue. The Xbox 360 platform was designed to be updated, and we are prepared to respond appropriately should any unauthorized activity be identified.

Everyone should keep in mind that Microsoft invests a great deal of time and effort to ensure that Xbox gamers enjoy the most powerful and exhilarating game experience available today. Genuine and unmodified Microsoft Xbox products provide gamers with the reliability, security, support and dynamic gaming experience that they expect. Microsoft works with a large group of legitimate business partners to sell and service genuine Microsoft Xbox products. Microsoft does not authorize or support any products or companies that modify or change the Xbox console in any way.

To be honest and this is only my opinion,

I dont care about the Hack, yeah sure, it proves a point that anything is hackable and well done to those who did it , your skills are pure genius,
But i`m havin too much fun on xbox live to even think about hackin my xbox360.

Let me interpret:

"Oh god! Please don't copy our games, our publishers and software partners are going to be pist if you do... The REAL security wasn't broken, it was just some other thing that we didn't think about. Come on, our bad, please don't take advantage of it... We'll zap you with a Live update, so don't try it! Wah wah wah..."

The whole thing sounded like a desperate cry to hackers not to deliver the death blow, if you ask me jester.gif

I have to agree with the hack. I dont care too much about it myself also. I think MS or M$ or how ever you like to lable them did a great job with the 360. Yes, they took lessons learned from the hacked xbox and placed them in the 360 to give what alot of us really wanted. I love the xbmc type feel MS did with the 360. I love what they did with live, hell the gamer cards are cool also.

Yes the dvd firmware was hacked, MS is kind of pissed about it, but the main security of the box hasnt been touched and I think they are more happy about that. Locking the dvd firmware will be on their list of things to get done for the next version of the 360 they come out with. But thoes of us that have it now, should look at it as we have the 'Limited Edition "Pirate able" Xbox 360' and that should bring a good price tag to the ones who only want to play backups. Myself I am looking into running unsigned code so I can load up mame and have some old school games also.

I really dont want to see the 360 crash and burn like the Dream Cast did. So if that was their desperate cry out for the hackers not to release it and if it is then I cry right with them.

To have the 360 to run only backed up games and not able to run homebrew will bring the 360 and MS to their knees and all the publishers will not release any more games for it because they will not make the money back. I am glad this hack hasnt been release, and if there is any one out there that can comeup with a software flash, keep it to yourself and buddies. Dont release it out to the wild as you will be the hand that will deal the killing blow to the 360.

If you want the 360 to play games but you cant pay the $60 price tag for a game, then the 360 isnt for you and you need to get a better paying job. Hell maybe you need to learn to price match or wait for deals on games.

Off topic but usefull - I pickup Elder Scrolls IV at bestbuy for 44.95 because I priced matched it to compusa (but they didnt have it in stock and bestbuy did). My buddy got it for 25.00 because he had some bestbuy points.

The Dreamcast wouldn't have crashed and burned if the self-booting copies had surfaced sooner. The announcement that it was being dropped came at about the same time as the boot disc was released.

That's why the PlayStation was a success. Same price as its rivals, but copies for a fiver. No contest!
