Ok I just bought an xbox off ebay , was horribly dissapointed with the condition...to many things to even list. But I think I got it all together and ready to go. So I plug in the power cord and the fan starts spinning really fast (faster than normal) but the xbox is still off....when I hit the power button the fan goes back to normal and the xbox comes on. I have no idea what could be causing this and how to get it to stop , I already looked to make sure nothing was shorting out or something. If anyone has any suggestions that could help I would greatly appriciate it.... thnx biggrin.gif

sounds like a PSU problem, like it's not fully turning off. With the Xbox off, but plugged in, check the voltage on the 12V line

yeah, and you might as well (once you get a multimeter) check the resistance for the front pannel buttons (making sure they read 10 ohms when not pressed and 0 when pressed. (test pins 1 and 2).

A new psu would cost about the same as a multimeter , Would it be anything other than the psu causing this? I tried swapping out a different fan ...

well, its possible that it could be something other than the mb. the power supply has to be told to turn on (if it works right) by the power buttons, but if there is something wrong with your power buttons (like they dont have any resistance anymore) then you might need to repair something with the front pannel. you should probably just borrow a multi-meter. because if its not your psu then your out 20+ bucks. and then you gotta buy a new MB at about 50 bucks not including a locked drive. anyway, it sounds most like a MB/Front pannel prob to me. but if you had a Multi-meter it would be a great idea to test ALL the voltages of your psu while in sleep and on mode.
