U.S. Intercepts Al Qaeda-Bound Cell Phones
Updated 7:58 PM ET September 9, 2002

HOUSTON (Reuters) - U.S. Customs agents at the Port of Houston found a large shipment of cell phones in January that were being sent out of the country to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network, a customs official said on Monday.

The port's U.S. Customs director, John Babb, said an estimated 1,000 phones were discovered in a cargo container during a routine check by a customs inspector using an X-ray machine.

A Customs spokeswoman later said only 250 phones were found.

"We did find here at the Port of Houston a large cache of cell phones that were destined to go to the al Qaeda network," Babb said during a news conference on security at the port, the second largest in the U.S.

"The order (for the phones) was placed properly with a legitimate company supposedly to a legitimate source. However, through our investigation it was disclosed that it was an illegitimate source," he said.

Babb said the find led to arrests in other unspecified countries. He did not say where the phones were being shipped.

Al Qaeda is blamed for the Sept. 11 attacks that killed about 3,000 people in the United States. The whereabouts of bin Laden, who led and financed the group, is not known, but he may have been killed during U.S. bombing raids in Afghanistan, U.S. officials have said.

Babb said two other questionable shipments had been found at the Houston port and were under investigation, but he would not disclose any details about them.

My god, what the hell are these fucking idiots doing! Why did they go to the press with this!!!??? grr.gif

Do you have ANY idea what kind of landfall this was? Think about it! They could have silently moved the phones over to a nice dark room full of FBI/CIA tech nerds and let them install Digital Voice recognition chips, GPS transceiver modules to be detected by Satellite, micro camera relays via satellite! Gahhhh the possibilities!

These phones were destined for people we want to know intimately! They handed us the GOLDEN GOOSE of oppurtunity to bug their phones, and allow us to track the use worldwide, but noooooooo buck tooth fucking customs screws the pooch here and goes to the press! grr.gif grr.gif

I want to know WHY they did this..jesus fecking A!!

Tribal Prophet,
I am from the USA, & take offense to what you wrote. I agree that it was a badly handled situation with many missed opportunities like Dark Schneider states, but what has being raised in America have to do with it? The same situation could have occured anywhere in the world, for the stupid reasons that you are concluding.
Maybe your feelings stem from other "hidden" feelings/Jealousies that you may have about this great country. I am not saying that the USA does not have it's faults. However, patriotism is what has made the United States the great country that it is, and was increased ten-fold after the event of 9-11-2001. The above comments would hit a bad nerve in all people that call themselves Americans. I find it neccessary to write this in defence of my country, as I am sure you would if someone made stupid remarks about the place you call home.
Peace be with you Tribal Prophet.

It's simply because the wrong people got the information first and saw it as news and not an opportunity... unlike us saavy people in the xbox-scene.com forums.

It has nothing to with being an American seeking glory... we don't need to. We save the world's asses over and over... that's glory enough.

My friend, if you want to bash America, you picked the wrong time... we're just itching for a fight...

...I might be a tad edgy though... I'm in the military and have been to the middleast 3 times!!!... I would suggest just making that place a glass parking lot... (with all the women and children moved out ahead of time... I'm not all about that...).

I think that the us customs were not to blame. I mean imagine it:
"Hi, you got anything in the back"
"no"
"ill just check"
(finds 250 fones)
"what are these"
"oh its just going to osama binladen, its ok"
"just stay here"
(they carry all the phones inside)
The scientist says:
"mmm, we can bug all 250 but it would take 20 men working all night, and theres only me here"
"ok we'll get sum more men then."
The lorry drivers see 19 men going inside at 10:00 at night, and theyve been waiting there for 5 hours already like good little lorry drivers shud
"right lets get these sorted, get to work men!"
they break ten fones in the process of bugging them.
5:00am
"wake up"
"what? dry.gif "
"heres the 240 fones you had"
"oh thankyou, your so kind"
not making any attempt whatsoever to question the loss of ten fones, and the unloading, reloading and time wait.
They drive off into the sunrise (thats what the boats called) and reach osama bin laden. "heres the fones u ordered sir (oh thanks, stick em in that rock crevice over there.

Sounds immistakably unreal to me. biggrin.gif

Sorry but I gotta give my 2 Cents worth.

The problem is THE MEDIA!

The media does not know where to draw the line on ANY issues. They rush judgment and spout false infomration to be the first news source out with the info. Its all a game to them do you think they care about the US or about getting that promotion? I mean Everything is rushed out. Look at the old days when there was a war NO-ONE got information about logistics etc.. Now its an f-in dog and pony show. Why the hell does the people need to know EVERY single detail. YES YES I hear you all im not a blind goat beleiving everything our government says or does it right. But once these Politicaly correct pussbags hear we might use this or that, than all the sudden its not a war, but a PR contest. War isnt FAIR, war isnt pretty, war isnt conventional, WAR is WAR you win or lose, no middle ground, and I for one wish the GODDAMN news organazations would shut up on certian issues and let the Government do its job and wipe these bastards off the face of the earth.

I have to agree with Dark Schneider about the advantages we could have had. It's a shame that such opportunity gets wasted because of some of low-life reporter.

But then again we do not know the whole picture. How information or disinformation plays a role in national security is something only the top brass know.

When it comes to the security of the United States it is best to keep the ole' mouth shut! To quote an old saying, "Loose lips sinks ships.".

GOD BLESS AMERICA!
