I was up late on April 30th working on a DVD project, so I thought to myself I should render a preview of my progess so far and see how it would look on my HDTV via XBMC. I turned my xbox on and turn back to my computer which is nearby. I turn back to my xbox and see that its off. "That's odd", I said, "I thought I turned it on". I press the power on and three seconds later, it shuts off again. "This can't be good", I thought to myself. Moments later, I smelled a distinct smell of burning metal. "Oh, [great]." I said aloud as I pull my xbox away from my tv and reciever. Opening my xbox, I didn't see the problem at first glance. So I plugged it in and observed the motherboard while it powered on. Lo and behold I found the culprit (accompanied by a lovely firework show).

Poor Red Barkley (I named my xbox after its color, red, and one of my favorite ball players, Charles Barkley wink.gif ).

Thankfully, my modchip and hard drive appear to be ok, but I'm going to have to find some cash to pick up a new xbox. Just thought I'd share my story sad.gif .

This is unforunately becoming all too common on the older Xboxes. Your's looks like a v1.0 (judging by those ferrite cores on the controller wires), so it's pretty old.

A friend of mine's did this, but he said it went 'BANG'. Upon inspection, it almost blew a hole through the metal shielding under the mobo!

The MB was rooted as expected.

I've got a 1.0, and something similar happened to mine, although not that intense. A huge trace on the bottom blew, causing my entertainment center to be filled with sparks. Patched the trace and all is fine now.

Sorry to see that!

Makes me want to replace mine just incase. I think I will. Put a better cap in while I'm at it, then it'll keep the time longer. (I'm pretty sure that's the cap the blows).
