New DVD-drive by Lite-On Coming to Xbox 360. -- Posted by XanTium on May 18 08:31 EST
It propably doesn't have anything to do with the DVD firmware hacks as the decision to add, back then, BenQ as DVD manufacturer was made in january already, but it looks like we'll soon see a 3rd drive in the Xbox 360 (a BenQ-LiteOn-Philips or whatever they'll call it, and maybe MS will try secure it more?).
From digitimes.com:
[QUOTE]
Following the takeover of BenQ's optical disc drive (ODD) unit, Lite-On IT has landed loader orders for Microsoft's Xbox 360 game console with volume shipments slated to start in the third quarter, according to the company.

Lite-On IT inherited the loader orders from BenQ and the company recently gained validation from Microsoft.
BenQ reportedly landed the orders in January via its joint-venture with Philips, Philips BenQ Digital Storage (PBDS).

I've had great experiences with Lite-On burners in the past. They've always been releable and fairly quiet. I'm interested to see if there are any noticable differences compared to the current drives once these new ones start appearing in the wild.

Yes Lite-on have been great drives for me, I've used a 16X DVD-rom to test all my burned discs (must be hundreds by now) with dvdspeed graphs and the drive never fails.. cheap and flimsy yet super robust drives!

Couldn't they be talking about supplying the drive mechanism for announced the M$ X360 HD DVD add-on?

BenQ already plan to produce some HD DVD drives (see here).

Just a thought.

Lite-on are really reliable. I've bought first ever Lite-on 52x burner years ago when they first came out and it's still going strong with no problems at all.

I'm hoping at the Least we can read the DVD drive firmware and also be able to decrypt it so we can get the key to flash the TS.

The Lite On IT drive I bought YEARS ago is still going strong... (although it's now in my GF's computer rather then my own)

Actually out of the 5 burners I've owned over the years I've only had 2 crap out on me... and they were both Sonys laugh.gif

the first burner I got was a Sony 2X CD it died after about 6 months... I replaced it with an HP drive that I sold years later after upgrading to my Lite-On CD burner/DVD reader combo drive, the person I sold it too still uses it today That lite-on drive probably burned well over 1000 discs while I had it. I was the only person on my dorm floor with a burner so I would go through a 50 spindle in a week easy (good money charging people $1 a disc for backing up their school files laugh.gif ).

I replaced the Lite-On drive with a sony DVD burner once I decided to start backing up my Xbox games and I put the Lite-On in my GF's computer. The Sony drive was flaky, burned coasters all the time and just never worked reliably the worst part was Sony didn't even support their own drive mad.gif Some BS about it being a cheap model that didn't come with support dry.gif

When I got into GC modding the drive didn't support mini-DVD media and of course the drive model wasn't even mentioned on the Sony website let alone having any firmware updates.... I got an NEC drive... that was about a year ago now and the NEC drive has been nothing but a pleasure (though it's a bit loud).

Samsung are good too as the Samsung Xbox 1 drives I've got (both the stockers and my modded 616ts) are just awesome. Similarly I've had 2 different PS2 with lasers crap out... again bad sony drives. Same thing with the Xbox 1 thompson drives...

So Lite-On, HP, NEC and Samsung are all good in my book... Thompson and Sony... BAD BAD drives...

My PC has a Lite On CDRW Burner 16x, 10x, 40x and I have had that for about 4 years now and it's still burning and reading great. About 2 years ago I got a Lite On DVD RW drive and that is still going strong to.

They have never failed on me, and I was recommended to buy them because my brother in law said it's the only drives he ever buys for PC's. I hope the Lite On drives in future 360 are as good as the PC drive quality. Didn't know that Lite On bought Benq though, what were them drives like?

Not all of them...

I have no idea about my first drive but I know my second one was a rebadged "Optorite"... even still I couldn't find updated drivers.

Also IIRC Sony used to rebadge BenQ drives and they weren't rebadging Lite-Ons until BenQ and Lite-On became the same company.
