I read through the pinned topic and searched through the forum without much luck so I thought I'd ask:

I modded my Xbox several months ago and it worked perfectly. Everything was a dream, but soon darkness struck... literally. I never moved my xbox, unplugged it, or any other thing to disturb its status of running perfect, and yet, something happened.

I tried to turn on my Xbox one morning and, as I pressed the power button, nothing happened. I pressed it several times, and still nothing. I than checked the plug, it was plugged in, so I pressed the button - nothing. I than unplugged the power cord - waited several minutes - and plugged it back in. With out doing anything, the Xbox started up and began booting... "Cool!" I thought. after about 5 seconds, however, darkness. The Xbox stopped working and shut off. I was befuddled.

I pressed the power button several times with no change in its ability to power on. I unplugged it again, put the cord back in, and again it started booting. Five seconds later - off. I thought the problem was that my power supply went goofy, so I bought a new one. Upon replacement, the same thing happened. I'd plug in the cord; the Xbox would power on by itself for 5 seconds, and then shut down.

I thought maybe the modchip was the problem - so I disconnected it. Same thing. I then thought it might be the actual power button. I unplugged it and same thing. I am running out of ideas and am hoping that some really smart person comes along as says, "oh, that’s a simple blah blah blah problem. Just do A, B, than C and you'll be fine." Please be that person... or any idea or theory will do. Thank you for listening... err. reading.

Thanks -
founded

Things I forgot:

The Xbox is v1.6.
The Modchip is an Xecuter v2.6Ce or whatever (most recent v2)
When it boots up, it does so for different lengths of time (sometimes 5 secs, sometimes 10 secs).
When it starts booting up, everything seems operational (the screen works and loads, the DVD ejects, the modchip lights go on, everything I can think of appears to be working perfectly).

Any other details?

theres a certain transistor on the 1.6 that often blows, making it not power on and do funny stuff.

If you have another broken motherboard you can steal one off of it, or use just about any PNP transistor.

I have a multimeter - is there a way I can test this before I go off an purchase a replacement? (i.e. check the voltages going through?) Thanks!

The collector of the transistor (shown in the pic in the link I gave) should be 3.3V, if it's anything less than 3V, it's bad.

Something new is going on - I lifted the mobo up off the bottom of the case and leaned it in the case in order to get better access to components for testing.... now, when I plug the power cord in the Xbox turns on and boots for 5-10 secs, turns off, then turns on again over and over..... still think its that one component?

Still sounds like the transistor. Replace it, it's cheap.

ok, so I got the transistors, mounted the one on my board replacing the known "problem" piece, and..... strangeness.

Now, when I plug my PSU in, my xbox powers on just fine (without me pressing any buttons to do so) and stays on. If I press the power button, nothing happens. Atleast it is staying on now, but I still don't have a solution... any guesses on the next step?

When the box automatically turns on and there is no function of the power button, it is also common that there is a short or bad contact on the power button wires or traces. If you have done any modding to the power button or P/E board/cables, check your work carefully and cover stripped wires with eletrical tape.

I have enver done any sort of modding to the power board, or anything with the power buttons, eject button, wires, connectors, etc. the only mod I ever did was fitting it with an Xecuter v2.6ce which worked perfectly for some time. I did notice (or I am over inspecting) that the d0 wire must have been pressed untera screw as it is flattened out. None of the wier is exposed, but I feel like this doesn't really make a difference.

I thank you all for all your help but, short of having someone else look at it, I think I am quickly running out of options. since it powers on and stays on now, maybe I should just invest in a power strip that becomes my new power button. tongue.gif

If there are any other suggestions, let me know - thank you all again.

I looked through that and it didn't give me much insight into my problem - I will read through it again in hoped that I missed something.

Here's a new and strange development, however. I hooked everything back in my xbox and got it into normal condition. I planned to plug it in to see if I could play a game or something without it shuttin off since it now stays on. I played a little bit, and then, without thinking, pushed thepower button to shut it off. IT WORKED! My xbox turned off because I pressed the button. but then, with little hesitation, it just powerd back on. I pushed the eject button - worked perfectly. pushed power, and again, it shut off, and then went right back on... does this little tidbit help at all?

I was testing the traces using that guide and my Xbox is no longer staying on - now it goes on once for 5-10 secs, shuts off, and stays off. damn.

My Xbox would power up on it's own, and not shut down. I opened the xbox up, checked the voltages, they were ok, checked the p/e board and it was good, removed the mod chip, and the problem remained. Eventually, I pulled the motherboard out, and found a thin film of green corrosion on some of the contacts on the back. I wiped it down with rubbing alcohol, and tried it out, works perfectly.

but since you are also having trouble with booting you may need to replace that transistor again, becuase poking around with testing equipment will short it out.
