So I've just installed Windows Vista Beta 2 on my main machine, and believe me, I know I can't expect everything to work.
But there are things I can live with, and things I can't.

One of the things I can't is not being able to access the shared folders on my Xbox through XBMC. I'm using a build of XBMC from earlier in the month, and it has been great for me.

After installing Vista x64, I tried setting up sharing. Got things set up the way they should be, but couldn't access my shares even from another XP machine.
Played around, and I'm now able to access all my shared folders on the Vista box on the other two computers on my network, yet completely unable to access them with my Xbox!!

I had the same problem when I tried running Windows Pro X64 edition, so I don't know if the 64-bit architechture is the problem, or what... But if ANYONE knows anything that could help, please reply!

Thanks in advance.

Same problem here. I can access from other xp machines, but not from my xbox. I did get xp x64 to work though. I went to where you join a domain, but joined the workgroup that I was already in instead. After a restart, it worked. I haven't found a way to do that in vista though.

XBMC -> VISTA does not work. It has been confirmed by multiple people in this forum. At the present time there is no fix. Your best bet is to hope that there will be better support in the final release. Remember that it is a beta product.

i found out that the smb with vista didn't work after i installed vista 2. A work around is to install the ccx steam, and the service to your services and set up the share, then just edit the sources. works fine for me after that.

Hi,
I had the same trouble, running a version of XBMC at least 6 months old, and Vista Beta 2 x86 (32bit) but after searching high and low, I noticed that a few people had reported success using a program called ccXstream (h**p://ccxgui.xboxmediacenter.de/download.html)

I downloaded v.1.41, installed it, added a couple of shares, and strated the service. I then edited the following lines in both the <video> and <music> section of XboxMediaCenter.xml:

<bookmark>
<name>XNS Network Share 2</name>
<path>xns://192.168.100.3:1400/</path>
</bookmark>
<bookmark>
<name>XBMSP Network Share 2</name>
<path>xbms://192.168.100.3:1400/</path>
</bookmark>

Obviously, change 192.168.100.3 to be the same IP as your computer. I can't remember which of the bookmarks (XNS or XBMS) worked, but one of them definately did. There was an autodiscover bookmark entry for XBMS already in my XboxMediaCenter.xml file, which when selected in XBMC (with ccXstream running on my computer), found my shared folders, and could access them. Sorry for the poor description, but I hope it makes some sense to you.

Ok, after some major tweaking, I got XBMC to communicate with Vista SMB shares.

Using Vista B2 build 5472.5, and a fairly recent T3CH XBMC build

I did it by editing my local security policy, among other things. I made a bunch of changes, all of which will make your Vista machine less secure, so be forewarned.

Here's what I did:

1) Shared folder containing files.
2) Made sure folder had "everyone" added as read, list, and execute permission to files
3) Checked share permissions, made sure that "everyone" had read permission to share.

4) Open a command prompt (cmd.exe), type mmc and hit <enter>
5) Vista will prompt for elevated security access for MMC, allow it.
6) When MMC loads, under file, select "Add or Remove Snap-In".
7) From the list of Snap-Ins, highlight "Group Policy Object Editor", hit "add".
8) A dialog box will appear, pick "Local Computer".
9) Hit 'OK'. You now should be back at the MMC panel
10) In the explorer pane, expand "Console Root" -> "Local Computer Policy" -> "Computer Configuration" -> "Windows Settings" -> "Security Settings" ->
"Local Policies". Click on "Security Options" under "Local Policies".
11) Under "Security Options", I made the following Changes:

Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translation: Change to Enable
Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts - Change to Disabled
Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares - Change to Disabled
Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users - Change to Enable
Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares - Change to Disabled
Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously - I added my root share name here
Network access: LAN Manager authentication level - Change to LM & NTLM, send NTLMv2 if negotiated

12) Close MMC.
13) open up command prompt (cmd.exe) again.
14) type GPUpdate /force
15) Reboot PC and XBMC

This is what worked for me - you may need to do less or more for yourself, but things are working ok for me now. XBMC still prompts for a password every now and then, however if I leave them blank, it will pass through ok.

What this setting set to initially?
Network access: LAN Manager authentication level

I think that might be the only change needed.

I don't know if this is relevant, but I had some other sharing probs and it was solved by connecting to the pc's ip address in stead of smb name.

The LAN Manager is set to NTLMv2 only, if I remember right.

I forgot to mention I disabled Windows Firewall as well.
