This is called the "Christmas Lights" Box.

There are not many known solutions....

From http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/xbox_motherboard.htm
QUOTE
Flashing Red and Green
Numerous causes, system failure see also Call Customer Service Error

Tries To Boot Three Times and then starts flashing red and green.
Also Known as "Christmas Lights" In my experience this is due to a failed mod chip and broken traces. I have also seen it on two stock Xboxes doing the same thing on the stock boxes it is worth installing a modchip to see if it can boot with a mod bios.

This is a Video Problem, try switching to a different Video cord if you have one laying around. If that doesnt fix it, try cleaning the contacts where the cord plugs in with some contact cleaner and some compressed air. If that doesnt work its probably something on the motherboard. If its plugged and unplugged alot there could be bad solder joints on the motherboard, if not its probably some little component somewhere. I could possibly fix it for you, but i cant promise anything. No video is tricky. But the Red and Amber color tell me its something in the video circuit. At that point you might be better off to buy a new system. I Have refurbs if you endup going that route. PM me and let me know how it goes.

i cant be too sure of the cause of the problem... but the only thing that i can think of to fix it, would be a chip. i have a solderless adapter and lots of chips lying around, so its real easy for me to say that, but for you, it could get costly.

Could also be a possible overheating problem or PSU related.

EDIT: Try this first, open the Xbox and boot with NOTHING connected to the IDE. If it boots and freezes at the X. Then i would have to say its an overheating MCPX chip.
