I had a hard drive locked when my mobo fried, if I replace the eeprom from a new mobo with the fried mobo eeprom, will the new mobo be able to unlock the old hard drive? In other words, does the eeprom hold the hdd unlock key? Or is it embeded somewhere else?
Thanks,
Q

No, the new mobo will not be able to unlock it, or the old mobo if you change the eeprom.
You could unlock it though, depending what size it is, hddunlock.com do drives >20gb free, download it and use HDDUNLOCK as the code, then you can relock it using your new eeprom.

Isn't the hdd unlock key generated from the eeprom and serial number/model number of the drive? I might be wrong, but I'm curious on how it works.

Correct. So long as you have a backup of the EEProm (or wish to switch the physical chips) and they are of a compatable version. EEProm versions are as follows:

1.0
1.1-1.5
1.6x

Ah, i am very sorry, yes i was wrong (very). I misread, i thought you were replacing an old eeprom chip with a new eeprom chip.

In case anyone else is in a similar situation, I just wanted to confirm that this does indeed work. Just load up the old eeprom with config magic and overwrite the eeprom on the new mobo (after backing it up of course).
