I bought a green subminiature Led from THE SOURCE. It is 2.1v at 20mA, it also says that Max current is 30mA.

I used this calculator
http://metku.net/index.html?sect=view&...dcalc/index_eng
and it said I should use a:
150 ohm 0.1 watts

Whats up with the 0.1 watts??

Anyways, I have three diffrent resitors that I bought today. 100 ohm, 220 ohm, and 330 ohm, all at 1/4 watts.

I am going to do the HDD activity led mod. Should I use the 100 ohm or the 220 ohm?

When I inputed the max current 30mA it said to use a 100 ohm resitor (which I have), so should I go with the 100 or the 220? Which one will get hotter? Which one will be safer for the led? Will the 220 not let enough power in?

The watts dont really matter for single LEDs, its when you have them in a parallel. Use the 220, if its too dim, go with the 100. I use 120 ohm, but I think I have used 100 ohm's.

I'd use the 100 if it said to at 30mA.

As for the Watt. Its the Watt of the resistor (1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, ETC). .25=1/4, .50=1/2, ETC. Its just saying about what size you need. So for .1 a 1/4 would do the job.

sweet, Thanks.

I am going to work on it right away.

This will be my first mod. Then when my leds from sickmods.net get here I can do the rest of my led mods.

I bought the stuff for the HDD activity led in town, so I didn't have to wait for them.

does it matter what wire I use?? I got some copper wire but it is rather thick. I think its 18 gage.

Okay thanks.

I just thought of some wire I could use.
I have this electronics toy thingy from when I was a wee little laddy. Its the thing where you hook up the wires to the springs and you make diffrent electronic things.

Will the wire for that work?? It would be nice if so, because it is thin and color coded.

Or will any wire work?

Any wire will work as long as its not bare. I use IDE cable for most of my mods, mainly because the wires are stuck to each other and neater.

Sure, why not? For a power power setup like LED's you can even use something like a old Hard Drive ribbon cable. Doesn't need to be very big.

Thanks for the help guys.

My first (electrical) mod on my xbox was a success.

I used the wire from that electronics toy I have and it worked good.

I also used the 220 ohm resitor. I figured it would be easier on the led and I don't want it to be that bright anyways.

I may change the 220 ohm to the 330 ohm resistor....... The blinking led is sometimes anoying blink.gif

Next up is a Blue P/E button led, Blue jewel ring, and I am making the Eject button indentation light up (the triangle and the dash under it are cut out and filled up with hot glue. I am gonna put two blue leds behind it and it will look sweet.)

Well good job there, dan, sounds like you're sticking to your plan.

I'm a poet and didn't even know it.
