Hey everyone, first off its great to be back on X-Scene. Seeing alot of new faces and its great to see this community getting more members on it smile.gif

Okay so here is the problem. My friend uses Xbox Live alot and does not wish to have his Xbox modded but he wanted me to check a problem he was and still is having with his xbox. His Halo 2 disc has been thrashed from being quite abused since the release day of the game and we thought that the only reason Halo 2 was lagging was because of the nasty scratches on it. We got the disc buffed and polished the pro way from my friends video store and the disc looked brand new so we tried it in the xbox. Still laggy and slow on load up, load up of maps at the start (first 3 seconds or so) so we thought it was a DVD problem. I figured that the reason we were seeing the LOADING SO AND SO PERCENT loaded on the screen before Halo 2 launched and seeing the maps lag in the first second or two at the start was due to the DVDROM being old, dusty or something wrong with it so I cleaned it throughouly and tried it out again. SAME problem. So I tried a DVDROM Swap with a very good Samsung I have spare. Same thing happened only the sounds werent loading properly which was a new and strange problem on this sick xbox. I switched the DVDROM back and had a look on the mobo. There is no sign of overheating, breaks, leaking etc on his motherboard. It looks just fine but I was thinking if this is a hard drive problem. Not to sure but is it possible that his hard drive is starting to fail? There are no signs of data corruption so it isn't very likely. His Xbox also has trouble readin discs most of the time. 6 out of 10 times discs do not load. I have tried and endless supply of brand new xbox games and its the same.

Well sorry for the long and scary post, I would just like to know what the problem is for this xbox. It seems to me that its hard drive and dvd rom failure but not sure

Thanks guys wink.gif

What you describe is very similar to what i have experienced when a very early hardware version of the xbox's with the thompson drives, the dvd drive starts to die. Before i started helping some friends out with the same problem, i didn't even know there was a loading screen before the main menu, my xbox with the nice samsung was so fast i never saw it.

however since you have swaped drives, i don't know. maybe that samsung is also dying or maybe his mobo is going and the ide controller is failing. Try putting his dvd drive in another xbox and use the same halo disk. If it works fine then you know your friend needs to start looking for a new xbox.
