I found a way to use dial up as the XBL connection, so i could play XBL. It lags, yes, but if you have a good ISP, you can connect to it pretty well. I just thought that it was cool, because it's not supposed to be possible.

Ya when I first got my xbox all we had was dial up and thats how I got updates and shit, thought i never dared to try and play, plus now bungie would probably ban you for trying to standby since it looks the same to them.

They don't care if your trying to host, all they care about is the fact that your internet acts the exact same way as someone who is using their modem to standby. The characteristics are very similar, high ping times, very bad connection consistently. Those all point to standby to Bungie. and the highest connection doesn't always get the host. not to many people I know have a higher connection than me and I usually don't get it. 9mb down 1 up. Also standbyers don't always get host either but they still continually lag. And bungie has actually said that if you have a bad connection it might be best to just stay in customs until you get a better connection.

Well the way that these guys are talking about involves using a computer that has both and ethernet port and a modem. You connect to the internet with your modem and turn on internet sharing with your ethernet port. Depending on what type of computer you have you might need to get a crossover ethernet cable. I think further up they describe how to turn it on in windows you turn on ICS, on a mac you go to sharing in the preferences then to internet and tell it to share. If you couldn't tell I'm a Mac guy but I'm sure someone else can give you more details on doing it in windows.
