When running flash 21, it says drive build not detected? I connected the drive using the hotswap method. any ideas why this could be and what I could do to solve it?

Dont use hotswap. Use crosswire, or try slax. Slax hasn't worked for me or any of my friends so just use crosswire.

Edit: also, what is the version on your drive? what package are you using to flash it?
