What am I missing here? I have seen a lot of posts from people that have different drives (other than the coveted Pioneer 111d) that have been unsuccessful in burning backups. Is this primarily from user error? Shouldn't a properly flashed DVD burner (with official or modified firmware) capable of booksetting DVD+R DL media to DVD-ROM be just fine to burn backups? I have an NEC 3500A burner with modified firmware that sets all booktypes to DVD-ROM, DL, +R, and +RW. Now, I haven't attempted to burn a backup yet, but I will, and technically I don't see why it shouldn't work. Are people just not modifying their burner's firmware to compensate, which is why the 111d (OOB does DL bitsetting to DVD-ROM) is recommended?

Please help me understand, as I have searched, especially if there is a technical reason that I haven't been able to find an answer for.

Thanks guys, you are the best.

Yes, there are a number of things that are attributed to user error. First and foremost is the fact that a number of people are using inferrior quality media. Truth be told the only really decent D/L media out there is Verbatim D/L DVD+R. All of the other stuff is a real gamble. Second, a number of people don't bother upgrading their firmware or upgrading to the proper firmware which means that it won't set the booktype to DVD-ROM properly. Third people keep using software which is known for questionable burns or sometimes requires special settings to get XBOX backups to work properly (IMHO Nero is the biggest offender in this department and Nero 7 in particular still has a long way to go before it is a truly stable program). People using shoddy ISO Extraction/Creation programs. Then there is also the one variable that simply can't be helped. The Hitachi drive in the 360 is picky even accounting for all of the above, so it may or may not work regardless of what you do.

I agree though, that anyone of the above could easily be an obsticle that could be fixed and greatly improve people's chances of getting working backups.
