Hey, I'm thinking about applying for a job at best buy. And I'm not exactly so thrilled about working at such a large store. (I prefer to work at smaller stores or an office setting) So I'm kinda scopin it out to see if it'll be worth it, and I'm wondering what the employee discount is... I know someone here has to work at best buy or has at one point...

Also, like if it varies from item to item, or what position you have... I'd be working in non-commissioned sales as a sales associate in the PC dept...

I figure I might as well ask and see if anyone knows how much I can expect to make...I'm sure it varies from store to store and state to state, but I'd still like to know what you made/make...

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help!

I have never worked at best buy, but I know a couple people who do. One of my friends says his discount is quite nice. All he has to pay is 5% more than what the store paid for it. This is a HUGE savings on some things (like get cables and such for a buck or two instead of like 20), but for others (cds, dvds, computers.....) its like no savings at all. He also gets cd/dvd+-r's for next to nothing. I guess what happens is if a customer returns any of these they can't put it back on the shelf (because the customer may have burned porn on there or something) so they sell them to their employees. He has gotten me spindles of 100 dvd+r's for 5 bucks before, so I got that goin for me....

Hey thanks for the replies guys...so far it doesn't exactly seem like a place I would want to work at...I just need to find another smaller place now...
I bet EBGames might be decent, but I would not call myself a gamer at all. I just love technology, and play the ocassional halo 2 match on live...
An apple store would be perfect, but there's not a single one in Alaska, lol.

their discount is excellent on most things, just a few % above cost.

Example:

The Pioneer 53" HDTV I bought in 2001 was $4,100.00 in the store. His discount brought it down to $2,300.00

I had it for 3 years and sold it for a $200.00 profit smile.gif

Things like video games dont come down much, usually $4.00 each, and consoles dont come down more than a $1 or 2

QUOTE(hamwbone @ Sep 11 2006, 11:36 PM) *

i worked there for a year, what you wanna know?

w/in the next year I want to purchase a lot of camera equipment (Canon camera (mark II) (about a 2500 camera) , lenses, bag, memory cards, etc) and I was wondering if it would be worth it for me to go work there to get a discount. What kind of discount could I expect to get on camera equipment? How long would I have to work there to get it (one month, 3 months)? I've read different places that the discount would be like 5-10% above wholesale price. Thanks to all who respond.

Seeking knowledge
