Well this might work better if your console is constantly freezing. That's the main problem I was having. I only got the Red ring of Death a couple of times.

Ok my 360 decided to start freezing up on me in saints row. I thought eh not much of a problem. Then like what most people said, it finally gave me the Red Ring of Death. Ahhhhhhhhh Nooooooooooo I thought. Then I started reading up and decided to try the thermal upgrade as I was out of warranty so I thought, why not? That worked and lasted for about week then it happened again.

It was this time that I realized that the fans were not spinning up to full speed when the console was playing a game. The fans were spinning the same speed (kinda slow) regardless of playtime and it would freeze. When it was working the fans would speed up and slow down depending whether I was at the dashboard (slow) and playing a game (fast). I thought maybe the thermal sensor is screwed so I decided to do the 12vfan Mod.

While doing this I thought the white cover in between the fans and heatsinks was not really sucking good air from the top of the GPU heatsink. It seems to just suck it in thru the back part of the heatsink. This is when I decided what the hell and try something a little different. I decided to close off the top of the GPU heatsink. Basically I just put a cover on top and taped it to the white fan cover.

Here are some pics.

I used the cardboard insert from a dvd+r case and cut it to size. Now it seems that air flows thru the entire heatsink instead of just the back.

I know the DVD drive is supposed to kinda do the same thing but it's not close enough to the heatsink to work effectively.

You're probably thinking "Geewhizz Chuxty, what it the paper catches on fire?" Well, if you've done all the mods here then it shouldn't. If you are weary then just use some hight temp plastic or rubber.

Before this mod. I could only play a lap of PGR3 before it locked up and maybe 2 mins of 1 quarter in madden 07.

After this mod. PGR3 for an hour and madden 07 for an entire game and it still hasn't locked up once.

So basically here are the steps you need to go thru. Visit the tutorials for each one.

1. THERMAL PASTE UPGRADE (MAYBE OPTIONAL)

2. 12v FAN MOD BUT USE THE 12V POWER FROM HERE

3. APPLY HEATSINK SIZED THICK PAPER, LIKE PHOTO PAPER TO THE TOP OF THE GPU HEATSINK AND TAPE IT TO THE WHITE FAN COVER.

That's it! This has worked for me so far and I hope it works for you too!

Ive seen this done with aluminum foil. Its a great idea. Also what people dont realize is running the stock fans at 12v is better than buying aftermarket fans because it blows just as much air at that voltage and the seal it makes around the air duct.

I know foil would be good but I'm afraid of some piece flying off and shorting out the board so I'd prefer something less conductive like plastic or rubber. Of course this is really the cheapmod way to do it. I have been using this for 8 hours now and not one hiccup yet! If your console is freezing and you don't have warranty then at least try the 12v mod and this before you fry your board with a heatgun.

thats a good idea might do that next time i take my console apart since my fans are already running on 12v do the stock fans really pull as much air as aftermarket ones at 12v?

I'm not going to lie... it aint pretty.
But you know what, it works smile.gif Awesome job.

Great work

Surprising 2 cents of materials (well, plus the solder and wires) can make a $300 machine work again, huh? tongue.gif

ah the 3 red lights of death. the unknown error and a million fixes for it. currently, mine has been heat gun'd 3x's and i put heatsinks on the southbridge and ram. i wanted to get the ram on the bottom too but the heatsinks won't fit sad.gif anyways, it is running more stable now than what it was. if it dies again, i'll try to get some better airflow to the gpu heatsink.

note: if you want to see your stock fans run at full speed take off the plastic piece between the fans and heatsinks, but beware console will overheat after a few mins.

It's a shame M$ couldn't think to pay the 3 extra cents for a little more plastic.

Glad to hear this works.

I bet the difference would be .0001 cents extra...

Just did the same on mine, I used the plastic from a old tape case I had.

Seems to make a difference on the temp, I feel the case above the dvd drive and it is MUCH cooler than it was before.

And MS should have done it, but it probably was like .03 cents difference...but also remember that times 5 million units = $150,000!!!

They still should have done it though as it may have helped to prevent the problems with the original consoles (and some still today).

This would be good if you haven't had problems yet and you already opened your 360. I wouldn't recommend this if you haven't opened it yet.
