Moderator note: If you have E71, post it in here. DO NOT start a new topic. There were too many already. It will be closed/merged with this one.

It's obvious that the E71 people are experiencing something different (and right now it doesn't have a similar fix according to THIS POST) compared to the E66 folks.
Keep it in here, and hopefully a fix will be found soon.

If your console can be returned, DO IT. Right now, that's the official advice from M$. Return it and tell the store, "Do not re-sell this console".

Ok, so you closed my last thread about this because you said someone had already posted about it, but your missing the two very big differences.

A: This was a brand new un-modified console (*unlike the other guy who had a modified firmware,

B: The error i got was E 71, not E 66

Here was my last topics content;

QUOTE
OK guys, today i went out and bought myself a new 360 console. When i got home i hooked everything up and booted the console up to set all of the settings and what not. After i had set the default language english, it brought me to the Xbox Live setup section. I picked the option that said somthing like "i already have xbox live"
After i picked it it said to me i need to get an update to sign into live, (*i assumed it was just the regular dash update that is required to bring it up to date*) After the update was complete it reastarted my box and took me to the 360 boot screen, half way through the boot screen the xbox flashed up the black screen with the call support screen and the error code " E 71". I called XBL and asked about it and the response i got went somthing like this, " Did you update the box when it asked you?" i ansewerd yes, then she said "Well thats was your problem, the update that we released this morning was faulty and causing systems to die" SOOOOOO! They told me to go back the store i bought it from and exchange it, and to tell them not to re-sell it. So i just thought some of you mught want to know, and what are your view on it?

How would flashing a clean drive fix anything? I just exchanged my bricked box at target for a new one, and this time when i got home i called up xbox to ask if i should update it again or what. And she said that they have been getting alot of calls about it, and that theres no official word from "The guys upstairs". And to wait another 24 hours to see what happens.

Hey Edina,

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I got a new 360 today (it was a replacement coming from warrantee repair, but a new unit none the less) and when it booted up I selected my profile off of the hard drive, ran through the update, and as soon as it rebooted --- E 71! I haven't called Microsoft yet, but just know that you're not alone!

I've also had someone PM me saying that they have the same problem. This cant be to good for microsoft, not only is the problem itself going to be a real pain in the ass for them, but especially with the PS3 and Wii release just 3 weeks off... Im afraid of updates now, i wanna just hide in my closet untill microsoft stops making em!

*EDIT*

I found a link to one of the threads on the official xbox forums, no word from M$ yet...

I can assure you that there are issues with the fall update.

I have an early build 360 (got it 2 days before Xmas). I was running it with VGA cable on my 1080p TV (accepts 1080p via VGA, HDMI and component).

Installed the update tonight, console d/l'd update, installed it, powered off and came back on with the dreaded rings of light.

I just spent time with support. She told me to check the boards for additional info. That's why I am here now.

She did not know why the update had not been pulled. They have 'suddenly' gotten an influx of rings of light calls. Seems like the updates were fine this morning, but lately, all she has gotten were these types of calls.

This does not impact everyone, but it has impacted me, as well as 'alot of others' (her words, not mine).

Do yourselves a favor. Do not d/l'd the update right now. Give it a day or two and see if this is something that happened only to people during a certain timeframe, or just a random event.

Within 24-48 hours they will have an update to my ticket. Looks like I'm getting a new box. I'm not happy about being without my box for even 24 hours.

Stay tuned. I'll update everyone when I know more.

-- Oz

p.s. No my xbox has never been modded. Never been opened, so please don't speculate that is why mine died.

I have had the same problem. I bought a new 360 a few hours ago and after installing the mandatory update, I am getting number but a red light and the E 71 error code... I'm heading back to Target tomorrow and going to exchange it for another one.

Man o Man, I bought another xbox 360 today. I bought it home and of course added xtreme firmware to it. I flashed it with Gary-OPA-XTREME-HITACHI-7IN1-V2_1,the flash went good. After the flash I put the box back together and proceeded thru the setup. I did the dreaded live update and upon rebooting I get the dreaded error 71 <---wtf does that mean. Also I tryed to boot to the dash by unhooking the dvd drive...same error code. I also restored the drive to normal, needeless to say that did nothing. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly apperciated. Is there a fix for this or am I just fucked with no vaseline? Thanks in advance for any help given

Error 71 has something to do with the box being broken (motherboard screwed?), some people got it when the first update came along, then again some got it while doing nothing (overheating), I'd say it's a sign the update went bad. Hope you were careful when opening your box (does it still kinda look like that it still has it's warranty? Cause you need to send it back to the shop tongue.gif )

wont be getting another tho, Ill buy a WII and enjoy the difference (dont play much console anyways anymore as is)

hopefully there will be a way to fix them later (just put it in a box and let it sit for awhile)

After doing some research,i found on xbox.com that a few more people(non-modders)got hit with the same error. I wonder how MS will fix this shit. The box is toast, and this is bullshit. MS needs to watch what they do and forget updates....fuckin queers. Oh ya,my warranty sticker looks good still =)
