More Fall Update Problems E71 - MS Annnounces Fix Coming in 12-24h
Posted by XanTium | November 1 18:40 EST

Well it looks like not only some Xbox360s with modified firmwares get an error message after the Fall 2006 update (read our full news coverage about the issue / Help out the E66 database here - thx), but more and more news comes up from non-modified consoles failing to reboot after the update.
Like some of our members reported on this forum thread brand-new or just-refurbished (not modified obviously) systems seem to give an ERROR 71 if you update them on first boot. So if you just bought an Xbox360 we suggest you don't upgrade your dashboard now. Some theories suggest the E71 problem is caused because many new Xbox360s consoles don't have the Spring 2006 loaded yet and apparently updating them directly to the Fall 2006 seems to fail ...

But, it seems like Microsoft is aware of the issue too, here's what they just published:
We're hearing from a small number of customers (less than 1%) that are having issues with the Fall Console Update. I've been told that the team should have an updated version in the next 12-24 hours. We'll let you know when the issue is resolved.

If you are having problems with the update for any reason, please call Xbox Support (1-800-4-MY-XBOX in the US and Canada). We're working with those affected to get them back up and running, and we're committed to making sure the update doesn't cause problems for anyone else.
Would be nice if MS released a bit more information about the issue, but well ... that's all we got for now.
My best guess is that MS is talking about the E71 issue in the above statement and that the E66 issue is probably some kind of model/version check on the dvd drive and in that case will not be 'fixed' by MS obviously.

"E66 issue is probably some kind of DVD-device/Version check on toshiba-samsung dvd drives and will thus not be fixed by MS obviously."

How can that be the case if people with non modded 360s had this error too. Well no update for me untill this whole mess is solved.

*sniff sniff* Do I smell a possible class-action lawsuit from people who got fucked over for having a non-modded xbox?

no way...it`s only a big shame that u cant update ur console without destroyin it...my last one got the Ring of Death 3 days ago...
So i bought today at 19.00 a new one...made the update and voila....box went up to console-sky...error 71...
so now i will get a used one instead of a new one which i paid nearly 300 euro for and only because freaky MS is way too stupid to make a workin update?...
no chance..there are a couple of laws which make it possible, that ppl dont have to wait or send em to MS...

I haven't updated yet. I have a Samsung (M25) with Xtreme v3.3.

I'm gonna wait until everything gets fixed.

Wow, I just bought my xbox360 brand new last week. Good thing that the first thing I did was run the update on live. Updated again last night with no problems.

Also E66 and E71 are 2 different problems. E66 is for people with modified Samsungs and E71 is for people with new xboxes that didn't get the spring update.

There's a big difference between saying a "small number" and a small percentage.... even 1% of a customer base of 6 million is 60000 people. lets say its half a %... still potentially 30000 people.... if that many people died in an earthquake you would certainly not be saying it was a small number.

A small number? Its every xbox they have sold since the 31st. Everyone that hasnt' got the previous update will crash. You would have to be stupid to update on xbox live for the first time knowing what it is doing.

On another note, I can imagine the entire testing team got fired over this.

I tuned on my 360 today and it updated fine, but I was curious to what the update actually was for. When I came here, I saw a bunch of horror stories. Do you think it is ok to use it for now, or should I be all paranoid about it and wait till a fix to be safe?

ps I just got Splinter Cell DA and I sorta wanna play it.

Yeah this seems like a pretty major mistake. Unless they can fix the ones that got E71 they are going to ruin alot of xboxes. I wonder if stores are putting up warnings about this. I would, I wouldn't want to go through all the trouble of having to exchange a bunch of xboxes that got mess up.
