Video Marketplace Now Live
Posted by XanTium | November 22 12:35 EST

From the majornelson.com:
[QUOTE]
A couple of weeks ago we announced that you would be able to download complete HD and SD versions of your favorite movies and TV shows from the Xbox Live Markeplace. That day is now here...moments ago we flipped the switch and the service is now available for all U.S. Xbox Live members. No dashboard update needed...just sign in to Xbox Live, and head over to Marketplace, then Media and Entertainment. You can also hit it directly from the Media blade->Video Marketplace. If you have any questions, hit this FAQ or this FAQ on the Xbox forums. It's fitting that on the Xbox 360's first birthday, it becomes the first gaming console in history to provide HD TV shows and movies directly to your gaming lair.

[Details on Xbox.com]
[Press release (with pricing information) on Xbox.com]

P.S. Check out the new way you can navigate the TV and Movies content now. It's a lot easier, especially when you get down to a list and you can use the left and right bumpers to navigate various views. When looking at a list, you can also click X to change the sort order. Try it out.

Edit: To everyone complaining/posting about why this is not available in their country, please listen to show #201, specifically the interview with Ross. He explains it quite nicely. If we had our way, we'd make it available to as many people as possible.

Think id rather buy my movie entertainment on a pressed HD-DVD and just watch TV through Freeview. Good idea though and will be interesting to see how they pan it out worldwide. They need to get UK done quickly, maybe even Canada first.

Edit, I just thought, for TV shows in the UK how are they going to get round the TV License issue. It would be very hard for BBC to catch them if people download BBC TV Shows through Market Place and the 360 owner don't have a TV license. I guess this is why it isn't launched worldwide.

You need a tv licence if you own a tv in the uk, so it will have nothing to do with that as no tv = no xbox

The only Batman movie I see is Batman Forever and it's only available in 480p Widescreen @ 1.3 GB

Shit, I been up since 7 this morning, queued 6 TV Shows with 2 more to get and 2 movies and it's just about 1/2 through with the 3rd download of 10 downloads. Maybe it's a LOT of people downloading because I too never seen this move so slow!

The quality with these TV Shows are really good, much better than my encoded videos which look blocky. Haven't seen how the movies look. I wonder what encoder and configuration they use to encode these?

I think this is VERY cool that they are doing it, I am sorry that it is only avail in the US at the moment, hopefully that can be dealt with later with licensing and such. But it is a strong push by Mickeysoft in the set-top box arena, so for that I applaud them.

Now for the downside heh. Is anyone else disappointed with the pricing? I mean for starters, Mickeysoft only gives us a 20gig drive. Which as anyone knows we don't have 20gig of space to use after everything. Most HD movies are like 4gig, a TV Show is like 2gig. IF they would actually let you use an External USB Hard drive to store things like this on, maybe I wouldn't be so disappointed. But as such, there is no chance of storing anything, due to if you wanted something else you would have to delete and grab another. I understand as of yet, the movies seem to be mostly rentals, so they get deleted, but they want like 350-450 points to purchase, that is almost $6. I can easily goto the video store and rent for much cheaper. And most of the time can keep it like 5 days, as where they delete it on the xbox after 24 hours once you watch it. And same with TV Episodes, they want to charge that much. I already have a Tivo, albeit not HD, but just cuz I haven't felt like spitting out the money for it. If the price was more reasonable I would be more inclined to maybe grab the shows I watch to get them in HD. I didn't pay attention if they were rentals too or keepers, either way for an aired show I thought it was pretty pricey. Maybe they don't control those costs, I don't know.

Regardless, not to sound contradicting with myself heh, I am pleased to see the move towards this, I do hope it takes off, I just hope pricing can get more reasonable and they release a patch to allow us to store to external drives, or even better network.

yes this is great i live in Sweden and have 3 xbox live acaunmts one for each continent. logged on to my american acaunt and downloaded some borat trailers.
having problems adding my credit card and getting it to work with live since it does not accept my swedish adress and so on. so the only way is to boy prepaid points card and the buy the stuff i want to see,
funny thing is that i download all my tv shows from the internet since we are sometimes seasons back in some shows, and now when i want to pay for a show i cant.....

this is going to be awalible here in sweden some day but i think that ms and the networks for each show will look into how far every country is in each season so they dont realease season 7 for download when the country is showing season 5 right now...

so until then it looks like ms points is the only way to download movies and TV shows.

must say that this is great movies on a console!!! to bad that it will probebly take 6 months before other countrys get to download movies and shows from xbox live sad.gif

That's why you delete it when you are finished. It's really simple.

I think its a pretty good idea...i was browsing through it looks pretty good if you ask me. Definatly a bummer for worldwide users though, I'm sure you guys will get it also though once they setup deals with local networks, would LOVE to see a bigger HDD though after the introduction of video marketplace, i gotta go through and delete SOOO much stuff I've had like 100MB free for a long time now, i guess its a good time to clean that up. Would love to see family guy and the simpsons on there at some point also

Don't even have to delete it when your finished, it deletes itself after 24 hours, its only a 24 hour rental...as with any of the movies

Movies that you RENT from the marketplace can only be viewed once. So there is no reason to use up what is left of your hard drive.

MS should get the Star Trek episodes correct. City on the Edge of Forever is incorrectly labeled.
