Alcatel Sues Microsoft for Patent Infringement
Posted by XanTium | November 23 13:55 EST

From dailytech.com:
[QUOTE]
French telecommunications company Alcatel has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft for patent infringement. Seven patents are at issue in the complaint, which are listed below:
* 6,339,830 and 6,874,090, "Deterministic User Authentication Service for Communication Network"
* 6,661,799, "Method And Apparatus for Facilitating Peer-to-Peer Application Communication"
* 6,823,390, "Method Of Setting Up Data Communication With A Communication Means And Furthermore Program Modules And Means Therefor"
* 6,112,226, "Method And Apparatus For Concurrently Encoding And Tagging Digital Information For Allowing Non-Sequential Access During Playback"
* 5,864,682 and 5,659,539, "Method and Apparatus for Frame Accurate Access of Digital Audio-Visual Information."

The patents outline methods in processing digital video, communications software and online authentication - all of which seem quite relevant to the just launched Xbox Live Video Marketplace.

This legal quibble may also stem from a Lucent and Microsoft patent war that started in 2003, and was recently revitalized over Xbox 360 video encoding, which Microsoft eventually won. Alcatel acquired Lucent earlier this year, absorbing its entire patent portfolio with it.

These law suits are rediculous. I guess you can patent just about anything and get sued. I wonder if anyone will sue Sony?

I guess it's freedom fries again in the canteen at Redmond tongue.gif

It's the lawyers and the patent offices who benefit the most I guess.

Jupp patents suck for the little man, they always gets screwed and companys such as MS IBM SONY, just takes whatever they can and then just put thier 500 lawyers on attack mode to bury the rightful owners with paper so they can't even do a fair assesment later in court.

When did suing become a viable money making model to run a business on?

Don't companies sell goods and services anymore?

Well, if you make stupid patents of things already available, then you deserve to get trampled by those 500 lawyers.

Look at the things they patented. Most are just ways to authenticate in a network, user management, and file sharing. All granted after 2002 btw. I wonder where they came up with those ideas???

The only one that seems remotely value is the decoder, even the other media patent looks like a load of crap. Basically, it is itunes or MS DRM encryptions. It's lock media from being played after an expiration.

Psh, I take a patent on being alive. Anyone else who is living is infringing on my patent and should either pay damages or kill themselves.

Seems everyone is suing everyone, it's a quick way to make a nice buck if you can win. Personally, I don't think Alcatel will win just because MS is bigger and will probably shit on them.

I'm pretty sure they paid out a settlement.
Also, I don't think Sony is allowed to use the rumble technology after losing the lawsuit, which is why they switched to sixaxis.
Just a guess though tongue.gif
