500MB Filesize Limit for PS3 E-Distribution Games
Posted by XanTium | 27-11-2006 20:55 EST

From next-gen.biz:
[QUOTE]
John Hight with Sony Computer Entertainment Santa Monica says that the maximum size of PS3 game downloads will be 10 times that of Xbox Live Arcade games.

Hight, who is director of external development, told Firing Squad, "We've arbitrarily set a limit of 500MB to keep download times reasonable. Since we've got plenty of HD space we can accommodate even bigger games and a lot of them."

Arbitrarily implies at random or without reason... if the reason was to keep download times reasonable then it wasn't exactly arbitrary now was it?

While I think it's nice they want to up the size ceiling on their e-distribution games, I think they're missing the point in some ways.

The whole idea is that the games are so small, cheap, and simple that disc based distribution doesn't make sense. When you're making games that approach footprints close to that of a CD they no longer fall into that category.

It's apparent that MS's limitation is based on their memory unit size, and it's also apparent that they could deal to make it a bit larger with games like Lumines Live having to be split up into a main download an an "expansion" to fit within that limit.

But I also think that by going with something half a gig in size, Sony's kind of missed the point.

psone games go up to 500MB, don't they? I believe this is the true reason for the 500MB size limit.

i'd love to know why every f*cking time sony tells us something new, and they feel the need to brag they ALWAYS.... ALWAYYYYYYYYYYYYS do it WHILE bashing microsoft. " oh our maximum download is 10 times the size of xbox live arcade"

who cares?... microsoft hasn't even made a limit to the size of downloadable games yet... so why did they compare it to xbox live arcade anyway, especially when demo's on xbox live are going over 1.2 gigs?

Actually MS does have an Xbox Arcade size limit of 50MB. I agree with what you are saying, it stinks of desperation.

I wonder what size they should have gone with to not get this ms reaction. 500Mb seems like a fine size, a 1GB memorycard goes for 30$. And with not using a fixed size you'll not need to brake it and thereby brake the point of there being a limit to begin with.

Twisted did you check a dictionary before you made the arbitrary comment? Since that is not all it means.

arbitrary (comparative more arbitrary, superlative most arbitrary)
1. Determined by impulse rather than reason.
2. Chosen for no reason or at random.

I guess I fail to see how my definition isn't correct.

Guess that is a big reason not to use something that is made up of anyone.

From a real dictionary

1. subject to individual will or judgment without restriction; contingent solely upon one's discretion: an arbitrary decision.
2. decided by a judge or arbiter rather than by a law or statute.
3. having unlimited power; uncontrolled or unrestricted by law; despotic; tyrannical: an arbitrary government.
4. capricious; unreasonable; unsupported: an arbitrary demand for payment.
5. Mathematics. undetermined; not assigned a specific value: an arbitrary constant.

–noun 6. arbitraries, Printing. (in Britain) peculiar (def. 9).

And I never said it wasn't correct.

I didn't look it up before I made that comment, I made it entirely on the definition of the word as I personally understood it. When you questioned if I looked it up I did and the definition I found matched exactly with what I thought it did.

I don't have access to a dead tree dictionary here at work so I had to take what I could get, though I question if this is a differences between American English and proper English seeing as the first definition you posted makes the most sense when applied to his comments.
