Xbox360 Dashboard Update (aka the 1080p fix)
Posted by XanTium | November 30 12:24 EST

From majornelson.com:
[QUOTE]
The next time you sign into Xbox Live, you'll be prompted for a dashboard update. The update contains:
* Improved support for HD video output over VGA, including 1080p resolution
* Improved plug and play performance for wired headsets when being used with wireless controllers
* Changes made to recently played games list to improve accuracy

This update is being rolled out across the world, so you may not get it exactly at this moment, so be patient.

I have a question... I've noticed there is a lot of talk about the VGA cable and updates... and I realize the only way to get 1080p is with the VGA cable. I don't have a 1080p TV as of now but I do own the VGA cable since I use to play on a 20inch flat screen monitor... I've recently upgraded to a 32 inch Samsung but I went back to using the component cable. Should I be using the VGA cable, would it give me a better picture on my TV? With all the talk about the VGA and updates it's got me curious.

I have used component and VGA and I would say hands down that VGA gives a MUCH better picture duality over component.

One of the advantages of VGA is that allows you to use more resolutions, perhaps even one that is closer to the native resolution of your monitor.

Any word yet on if / how this update works with non-factory DVD firmware?

I have also used it, but have found that that although VGA gives better sharpness and clarity, it results in washed out colors on the 360. Particularly greens look "brownish." This is not just my TV, as I have tried it on LCD's and Projectors as well. I own a dell 2405FPW 24'' LCD monitor with Picture in Picture and with 2 xbox 360's hooked up to the Component vs. VGA, VGA looks much more washed out.

Before the update, I had some screen tearing in the upper middle section of my screen when turning during graphically intensive parts of Gears of War (like when it's raining).

I have noticed that a little. But I believe that it is still a truer color than the component. Component tends to over emphasize color to an unnatural look.

But it is all personal preference.

I have experienced the same thing on my 46" Samasung 1080p LCD TV. I am currently using the component cables and running the console at 1080p. But when I use the VGA cable, the colors are not a vibrant and seem washed out. I wonder if this update will address this issue.
