Lite-On to make add-on HD DVD player for Xbox 360
Posted by XanTium | November 30 17:31 EST

From digitimes.com:
[QUOTE]
Lite-On IT next year will start making add-on an HD-DVD player for Microsoft's Xbox 360 game console, which is currently supplied by Toshiba, according to the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN). The paper added that Lite-On's revenues for the fourth quarter will rise sequentially because of increases in half-height DVD-burner shipments.

"add-on" being the key word in the description... so no.

So, will I be able to play games on this drive?

Kidding obviously, but now I'm starting to think I should hold off and get a later model. I don't know of any issues, but couldn't later models improve read speed or other features (not that movies need more bandwidth, but it might be nice to use as a data drive later on, right?)

that hasn't been announced yet.
What this news says is that the drive used in the HD-DVD addon will be made by lite-on soon. Currently the drive is produced by Toshiba.

They are a well respected company.
Personally I think their optical drives are shite. Tried a couple of burners and my Dad got a standalone. None wrote properly. If they recorded without issue then the resulting media was occasionally corrupt.

maybe a nice price between the retail for m$'s 199 and 150. i'm sure if a lite-on came out @ $199, same price as microsoft's, i'd buy microsoft's instead.

150 would be a steal; i'd jump on it for hd-dvd for vista and my 360. btw i have a sony dvddl burner that was rebadged from a lite-on. lite-on has some good quality stuff and sony even puts their name on it! smile.gif

we are not talking about burners here... just reading a disc... to all that are wondering about the brand. I am pretty sure most any company out there dealing with optical drives could shit out something worth a damn when it comes to reading... never heard anyone say damn i wish my dvd-rom would read better. I know some burners have issues with seek time on blank media but thats a whole different problem. As for lite-on they make a quality product... have had multiple burner/drives from them and never a problem.

The drive will still be microsoft branded. This news article is merely saying that that drive unit inside the add on case, which is currently made by toshiba, will be made by lite-on in the future. The translation in the news article is a bit rough, but that's what it was trying to say wink.gif
