PS3 vs Xbox 360 - Another Developer Speaks
Posted by XanTium | December 8 00:35 EST

From guardian.co.uk:
[QUOTE]
This week I spoke to Richard Hackett a head of technology at Blitz Games about his experiences with both machines. He feels that CELL has an ace up its sleeve and it's not something you might have predicted...

* One developer has publicly (although anonymously) stated that Xbox 360 - in games programming terms - is the better machine as the GPU is more powerful, providing greater pixel and vertex processing horsepower. Do you concur at all? Is this really what it all comes down to?
* The X360 GPU is slightly more flexible due to the subtle differences between the respective architectures of the nVidia and ATI chipset. Certain shader restrictions are lifted or easier to work around on X360. The bandwidth of the X360 GPU is pretty massive too, though partly this is balanced out by the differences in VRAM layout of the two systems that means the Xbox needs to move graphics data around the system more than the PS3 does. While the GPUs are fast and have a big impact on the visual quality and level of game effects, other factors such as general processing power and memory architecture also come into play.

Did you read the article? It's definitely in Sony's favor..

it sounds like the xbox "appears" to be better, but they are disagreeing. not directly though. wish they had actually released a little more info on this "ace up their sleeve"
then I might beleive them.

I could understand if they weren't allowed to discuss it, but now that the ps3 is out in the public, doesn't it not make sense to still keep secrets?

just my 2 cents

I think the question is, "Did YOU read his post?" or better yet "Did YOU understand it?" He was talking about how PS3 Fan boys are bowing over their system and their claims of how much more powerful it is than the Xbox 360. So, by the developer saying that the two have their own advantages: X360 - GPU PS3 - CPU, which was known for quite some time now... the overall performance is equal... You're saying that the article is in Sony's favor??? especially for all the ranting PS3 Fanboys. Wow. What has the world come too. Oh did I forget one thing that will really differentiate PS3 from Xbox 360 --- extra $200 to buy a PS3 smile.gif

From my 360 gaming experience, the system can handle TONS of objects in game play (such as dead rising, and ninety nine nights) and looks stunning (gears of war) what more can Sony's CPU do? I mean Xbox has 3 3.2 cores but how much CPU power is needed and how much is just to outdo the other's specs?

I would rather have a nicer picture anyway because of a better GPU then a CPU that may never be utilized.

I'm not picking sides either I think sony makes great products, I just love my 360.

The most important factor IMHO is what games the system releases. I would love to see the same game for a PS3 and an XBOX 360 and compare them side to side. I wonder if you would even notice a difference.

Blue Ray vs HD DVD is biggest difference.

In favor or not, we will just have to give the playstation 3 some time and see exactly how much more 'powerful' it really is.

Cmon now... I am tired of the whole graphics war... Where is the damn gameplay? The first time I seen Gears of War, I was instantly hooked. I didn't wait or read up on it until it was released. I just heard about it, but after seeing it, I was completely mind-blown.

If you want gameplay, Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast has to be a fighting game which has great replay value...

But lets not start a flame on this. I was only saying that im sure in the end people want a game which has great replay value and great play. biggrin.gif

I agree, but only 'slightly' in sony's favor with the whole 'trick up its sleeve' remark. The dev didn't saying anything that we already didn't know.

The PS3 should really have been better than the X360 considering the huge delay. The fact that it's on par with the X360 (and even if it can outdo the X360 slightly), is slightly unacceptable also considering the larger price tag. It should have had some geforce 8800 innovation in it since nvidia had been working on that for a loooong time now. They should be blowing the xbox360 out of the water.

Sony are really going downhill. I know a friend who works in servicing at a high street electronics store in the UK (Currys). He says that sony are really ruining the contract that they had with the parent company and that Currys will be stocking less sony stuff (and more of other stuff). That's a major blow since Currys' parent company Kingfisher also own PC World and Comet - two more of the biggest high street electronics stores. also some of their new stuff is of appauling build quality especially their laptops (despite the nice looks). Theres many other reasons and goingon's that he told me about where Sony are fucking themselves up but bottom line - Sony are going downhill.

I'm a X360 fanboy and a huge fan of ATI graphics. always have been, always will be until nvidia do something. Their 8800 GTX is a very powerful card but im waiting to see what ATI are pulling out of the bag because i have a feeling its going to be something similar to what the X360 has (and with even more power).

Because of my loyalty to ATI would be a major underlying reason for me getting the xbox360. They do create fantastic graphics chipsets and everyone knows their cards before the geforce 7 series created way better image quality in games than nvidia did - and using less bandwidth as well.

I can confirm this too, my brother studies computer engineering or somthing like that at uni and he heard similar things, he also works in staples, again its the same situation as currys. Sony have really messed up this year.

the 360 has more raw power hands down. it has 512 ram 3 prossers and a top of the line ati card. the ps3 only has 1 prosser 256 ram and a large nivida card. witch system will top out on gfx befor it runs out of memery it whont be the xbox. sorry fanboys the ps3 is weak the cell is knothing more then a ppc prossser on drugs with btw has a very slow memery bus i rember devs complaning abought that bascily it cant acess the gpu fast enough couse the prosser is to slow so yes the ps3 has a better gpu but you cant use all of its power.

that's not entirely true. both systems have 1 processor. the 360 has a triple core chip and the cell is a 7 core chip. memory, the 360 has it hands down. graphics, i would say is leaning towards the 360, but the cell i do believe just hasn't been pushed to it's limit, same goes with the 360's. raw processing power, the ps3 is the winner, it crunches more numbers than the 360, but to me not enough to be $200 more.

i do like the intrigration of the "next generation" video disk drive the ps3 has (this is to say that blu-ray wins, which i doubt), and the nice things you can do with the PSP. With that being said, there is nothing to say that MS won't come out with some type of portible xbox or at least some sort of accessory that the PSP can do.

Now, multimedia i believe that the Xbox has it hands down. hmmm, lets compair these. both can play music. both can show pictures. now, where ps3 gets a point over 360 is due to the builtin card readers. streaming from the computer.... can't remember is ps3 can do this or not, but would be surpirzed if it didn't. being able to run homebrew.... plus 10 points for ps3, and the surfice is only being scratched on that. 360............. enough said. where i think that 360 wins over all is with the media center that is built in. I know most of the people on here probably don't have a media center computer, or some might not even know what it is. let me put it this way, when vista comes out, and everyone that is tech savy will be going for vista ultimate, and most new computers will have home prem on it, then people will start to understand more. take a $100 tv tuner card that is hardware encoded, put it in, and bam..... you now have a $400 system that can game, play music, play videos, show pictures and is a DVR for watching TV, which not to mention will also do HDTV. to me, that's not bad.

before anyone goes bashing media center or anything else about doing tv on your computer, i have been using a p4 HT 3.0 ghz computer that serves two 360 with TV and i can still game on it. Yes HDD space is an issue, but i haven't really run into it except now that i'm trying to rip all my dvd's to my HDD for play back.

You cannot compare all the numbers the way you did. That is like saying my Yugo is running at 5000rpm and your Lamborghini is running at 4500 rpm. My Yugo smokes your Lamborghini.
