NPD November Peripheral Sales: 42k HD-DVD Addons

From gamasutra.com: [QUOTE] The second top selling peripheral for November was Microsoft's wireless controller for the Xbox 360, which sold 251,000 units in November in the U.S. Interestingly, the company's recently released HD-DVD add on for the Xbox 360, which allows console owners to watch movies released on the emerging high definition HD DVD disc format, only sold 42,000 units for the month. This compares rather poorly to sales of the PlayStation 3, which comes with competing Blu-ray drive as standard. The PS3 sold 197,000 units during its first month, and thus has theoretically created a much larger initial early adopter user base among gamers for the format, though admittedly it is far too early to declare any sort of victory for either side. QUOTE(nwo504 @ Dec 14 2006, 10:07 PM) does tht hdvdv player come with a free movie?
It comes with the unit, King Kong and the Media Center Remote. Break it down and you're getting the HDDVD for about US$140.

I must chime in as well, just for the fact of the matter. Of course, 1 being this is an XBOX site, so we are biased in our comments, but putting that aside, and repeating what everyone smart here has come to the assumption of, THESE ARE FREAKING GAME SYSTEMS. Why on earth would you force someone to buy a HD Movie format with a game system. At least Microsoft gives you that choice. And it is a great addon to compliment the product. But as mentioned, it is a choice. As said, definitely 42k of those XBOX users WANT the HD Format. Not the Blue Ray. As where the 200k PS3 users, have no clue what they want, but they do know they wanted a PS3 game system. The numbers are so irrelevant right now. The world is about Choice. And Microsoft for a change heh, gives us that choice.
Sorry for bringing up the same point over and over, it just really ticked me off. HEH!

QUOTE(21cwSpanky @ Dec 14 2006, 05:24 PM) Now I know i'm going to get flamed to hell for this, becuase, hey, it's an Xbox site.
But...
The point of the article was stating that the market has 4x as many blu-ray drives out as HD-DVD meaning that blu-ray might end up the dominant format due to the fact that alot more people have them, regardless of whether or not it came in a game console.
If your xbox came with a blu-ray would you go out and buy an HD-DVD player?
No flaming here But I would not say that there are 4x more blu-ray drives out there. It's more like there are 4x more blu-ray drives attached to a gaming console. What you don't know is that there are about 10x more HD-DVD only players out there because they are easier to produce. there are also more HD-DVD movies out there for the same reason. Just check Amazon.com and you will see... Edit, I stand corrected, the number of movies of each format available is pretty much the same as can be seen here... thedvdwars.com This post has been edited by drabbit: Dec 15 2006, 12:33 AM
