I tried playing a couple of wmv movies downloaded from ign over XBMC and neither worked.

they would come up but be super choppy and then stop.

have you tried playing them on your computer? XBMC definitely supports wmv. I don't think there are any video formats that aren't supported by xbmc, but you have to make sure you have the codecs. It could be that the files were High Def quality, which tends to be pretty choppy/laggy on the xbox, it just doesn't have the ram or processing power or whatever to do those well. I experience that whenever I try to view some of the High quality quicktime trailers.
