Hollywood Surprised By Xbox Video Marketplace
Posted by XanTium | January 2 20:35 EST

From 1up.com:
[QUOTE]
The push for HD has come from all corners of media, but actually accessing high-definition content isn't so simple -- the amount of people with HD televisions running standard-definition content is staggering. But Hollywood's initial investment into Microsoft's service has proved a profitable one, as its direction connection to the TV means there's no technical wizardry needed to move a computer-downloaded film onto the TV. Do I really expect my mom to figure out DVD burning? I can't even figure it out.

No official numbers have been released, but sales trackers report movies like Poseidon, which performed poorly during their box office run, are doing well on Xbox Live -- thanks to the availability of a HD version. It's cheaper and more convenient than tracking down a HD-DVD drive and wondering whether you're supposed to buy Blu-ray discs or not.

I saw Posideon in theatres with my girl and didn't enjoy that movie at all. It was the first movie i bought on the Video Marketplace and saw it again and actually enjoyed it on my friend's Plasma and sound system! Hopefully, these old fashioned Hollywood execs realize the true potential in downloadable media whether it's video, music, or and games (Live Arcade Rox!!!). Glad to see M$ is having success with this!

Why are we getting this story linked from 1up. They are second hand info and are making stuff up. Please skip reading the 1up article at all and go directly to variety. Propaganda sucks

Probable if/when a bigger hard drive is released because at the moment every time you buy a movie you would have to delete the old one, then re-download it if you want to watch the old one again. Ok if you have a fast connection but annoying if your like me and stuck on 512/256 ADSL.

the ability to rent movies on xbl is nice, but I dont think I would ever purchase anything off of it. I mean movies you buy off of it have zero portability... meaning you can only watch it on the xbox, you cant take it with you on your zune, or computer or whatever.

I didn't realize you could rent HD movies from Xbox Live. So I wouldn't even have to own a HDDVD player to watch a HD movie. The 360 will play it without the need of the HD Player. How much is the rental fee? I've never used Xbox Live b/c my upload is only 128kb and I figured I would get alot of lag during gameplay, but I may now to check out some movies since my download is over 2mbs.

Funny how it takes MS to solve some of Hollywood's problems - they have been legally going after movie downloaders for the past few years and spending very little time figuring out a digital downloadable method of distribution for their products. With all of Hollywood's greed, I am surprised that they have not pushed their own downloadable distribution method...probably due to the lack of a really good and easy way to pass content from the PC to the living room and that is where the 360 steps in...and MS gets a portion of their profits as well.
