I imported my 360 from the US, and live in Australia. Whilst I have a looooot of Region 1 dvds, if I am to go to my video store, I am forced to play the dvd on my original xbox. Is there any way, yet, to remove the DVD-region-locking (if that's a real term ) on the 360. Perhaps it would work if you flash your HD-DVD drive to trick the 360 into reading the discs as a certain region?

No, not yet. First of all, you cannot yet flash the HD-DVD drive.
The only thing the firmware hack for the built-in drive does is break the media-check function, essentially telling the 360 that the backup you have on DVD+R DL is a real Xbox 360 disc. Unfortunately, it doesn't break the region-code protection, as that is coded into the motherboard somewhere.
