Pre-CES: 10.4 million Xbox 360s Sold, IPTV Set-Top Support
Posted by XanTium | January 5 22:26 EST

From Dean Takahashi at mercurynews.com:
[QUOTE]
Bill Gates and Robbie Bach are expected to announce at the Consumer Electronics Show that Microsoft has sold more than 10.4 million Xbox 360s since the launch in November, 2005. That means Microsoft has also hit its targets for sales of consoles during the holidays.

Microsoft is also dropping something of a bomb at the show. Jim Brady, a spokesman for Microsoft, said Gates and Bach will say in the keynote speech Sunday night at the Venetian Hotel that the Xbox 360 will be able to serve as a set-top box for IPTV, or Internet protocol television. The details on this announcement are sketchy and Brady says only that it will appear later this year.
He did say that no consumers would be left behind, meaning that all of the 10 million plus Xbox 360s in the market would be able to participate in the IPTV services at some level.

Allow the ability to record shows to an external USB drive and bam, we've even got a recorder.

Why doesn't Microsoft fulfill their promise to help network directv receivers to vista that they made at the last CES, first.

Probably referring more to the core units that have no HD at all.

the 360 is becomin more and more of a media center (if this is true)....the potential is pretty good if u ask me. all we need now is support for formats other than M$ created ones.

i agree... support for divx, xvid and newer HD codecs would be great... but most likely won't be supported....

I thought it was pretty interesting, too. It could mean there's something else in this box that will enable more features. (TV tuner? Satellite decoder?) Or it could mean that a smaller or nonexistent hard drive on the "legacy" boxes will cause it to scale things back.

I have a feeling they're going to introduce this as a third sku, at the current Premium price, and drop the price of the other two systems. It might help protect against those who might be tempted to take advantage of Best Buy's product replacement plan to get the upgraded system.

Not that anyone would do that, of course. ph34r.gif

In all fairness Bill Gates isn't exactly a guy you should trust when it comes to the xbox (or anything else for that matter) If they had someone like Peter Moore announce this shit at CES I'd probably be more inclined to believe it.

Damn I also wanted to comment on the 10.4 sold figure. That figure isn't very good that would mean something like 9 miliion sold to actual custumers. This means they probably won't brake 10mil users until march.

I didn't see that one coming; consoles made doesn't equal consoles sold. We get it already. rolleyes.gif

That is how the other two consoles report 'sytems sold', as well.
